“For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 5:12 Mean?
"For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield." The psalm closes with a promise: God blesses the righteous and surrounds them with favor like a shield. The favor isn't an occasional gift — it's a surrounding, encompassing presence that covers every direction. The shield of favor is comprehensive protection.
The word "compass" (ta'terenu — you will crown/surround) carries both meanings: you'll crown them (placing honor on their head) and you'll surround them (encircling them on every side). The favor is both elevation and protection simultaneously. God lifts the righteous up AND covers them all around.
The simile "as with a shield" (katzsinnah — like a large shield) specifies the protective function: the tzsinnah was the large, full-body shield that covered the entire warrior. Not a buckler or small round shield — the full-length shield that protected from head to foot. God's favor provides complete coverage.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Do you believe God's favor surrounds you on every side — and does that change how you face threats?
- 2.What does the full-body shield (not a small buckler) teach about the completeness of God's protection?
- 3.How does a psalm that begins with desperate crying end with confident declaration of God's favor?
- 4.What direction are you unshielded — and does God's encompassing favor cover even that?
Devotional
God surrounds you with favor like a shield — not a small shield that covers one arm, but the full-body shield that covers everything from head to foot. The favor isn't partial protection. It's total coverage. Every direction. Every angle. Every threat met by favor that stands between you and whatever's coming.
The 'compass' — surround, encircle, crown — means the favor isn't just ahead of you. It's behind you, beside you, above you. The blessing doesn't just face forward like armor. It wraps around like an embrace. The shield isn't held in your hand. It's placed around you by God's hand. You don't carry the protection. The protection carries you.
The 'wilt bless the righteous' is the foundation: the favor follows the blessing. The blessing follows the righteousness. The sequence is: right living produces divine blessing, divine blessing produces encompassing favor, encompassing favor functions as a shield. The protection comes from the relationship, not from the equipment.
David writes this at the end of a psalm that began with a cry for help (verse 1-3) and moved through anger at the wicked (verse 4-6). The psalm that started in desperation ends in declaration: YOU will bless. YOU will surround. The journey from 'hear my cry' to 'You will shield me' is the journey of every honest prayer.
Do you believe God's favor surrounds you like a full-body shield — and does that belief change how you face the day?
