My Notes
What Does Psalms 53:5 Mean?
The psalmist describes an ironic scene: the enemies of God's people were terrified — but there was nothing to be afraid of. "Great fear, where no fear was." Their terror was real but baseless. God had already handled it.
The reversal is God's doing: He scattered the bones of the enemy (meaning their forces were dismantled, their power shattered). The ones who encamped against God's people — who set up positions, who organized opposition — were put to shame because God despised their effort.
"Where no fear was" is the key phrase. The enemies feared something that didn't exist — a threat that was already neutralized, a danger that God had already removed. Their fear was real. The basis for it was not. God had already won, and they were afraid of a battle that was already over.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What are you afraid of right now that might already be defeated — 'fear where no fear is'?
- 2.Have you ever discovered after the fact that God had already handled something you were terrified of?
- 3.How do you discern between real threats and fears based on something God has already neutralized?
- 4.What does it mean that God 'despised' the enemy's effort against His people?
Devotional
They were terrified. But there was nothing to be afraid of.
The enemies saw a threat. They panicked. They scattered. But the thing they feared? It wasn't there. God had already handled it. The bones were already scattered. The battle was already won. Their fear was real — but it was fear of something that no longer existed.
This works in two directions. For God's enemies: their terror was justified in one sense (God was against them) but misplaced in another (the specific threat they feared wasn't the real one — God Himself was). They were afraid of the wrong thing.
For God's people: the enemy that terrified you is already defeated. The opposition that seemed so organized, so threatening, so overwhelming — God has already scattered their bones. Their fear of you (because God is with you) is greater than your fear of them.
How much of what you're afraid of right now is "fear where no fear is"? How much of the opposition has already been dismantled by God while you're still bracing for impact? The enemy might still look threatening. But God might have already scattered the bones.
The battle you're dreading might already be over. You just haven't looked up to see the wreckage.
