Psalms 83:3

Psalms 83:3
They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 83:3 Mean?

Asaph describes a coordinated conspiracy against God's people: the enemies have taken "crafty counsel" — deliberate, strategic, sophisticated planning — against Israel. The targets are described as "thy people" and "thy hidden ones" (tsaphun — treasured, stored up, protected). God's people are his hidden treasure, and the enemies are scheming to steal them.

The word "crafty" (aram) implies shrewd intelligence, not brute force. These enemies aren't charging blindly — they're strategizing, planning, consulting with each other. The conspiracy is organized, multi-party, and deliberate. This isn't random hostility; it's coordinated malice.

"Thy hidden ones" is a remarkable term for God's people. It suggests that Israel is precious — like a valuable stored safely away — and that God considers attacks on them to be personal. The enemies aren't just fighting a nation; they're raiding God's treasury.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Where do you see 'crafty counsel' being used against you or what you care about?
  • 2.How does knowing you are God's 'hidden one' — his treasure — change how you face opposition?
  • 3.What's the difference between random hostility and coordinated spiritual opposition?
  • 4.How does God protect his 'hidden ones' from the crafty plans of enemies?

Devotional

The enemies aren't stupid. They're crafty. They take counsel, they strategize, they coordinate. The opposition to God's people in this psalm isn't random violence — it's organized, intelligent, deliberate malice.

This should inform how you understand the opposition in your own life. Not every challenge is a direct, visible attack. Some of the most dangerous threats come through crafty counsel — strategic manipulation, coordinated undermining, sophisticated plans that you don't see until they've been executed. The enemy of your soul doesn't always charge through the front door. Sometimes he files the paperwork that dismantles your foundation.

But the psalm's most beautiful detail is what it calls God's people: "thy hidden ones." You are God's treasure, hidden away, stored up, protected. The Hebrew word suggests something precious that has been deliberately placed in safekeeping. That's how God sees you — not as a soldier in his army (though you are) but as a treasure in his vault.

The conspiracy against you is crafty. But the one who hides you is craftier. The enemies can plan all they want — they're scheming against someone who belongs to the vault of God. The treasure is hidden in a place that no conspiracy, however sophisticated, can crack.
