Psalms 89:24

Psalms 89:24
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 89:24 Mean?

"But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted." God's PROMISE about the Davidic king (Psalm 89 — the great covenant-psalm): TWO divine attributes will ACCOMPANY the king — FAITHFULNESS (emunah — reliability, steadfastness, trustworthiness) and MERCY (chesed — loyal love, covenant kindness). These aren't gifts that come and go. They are WITH him — accompanying, attending, present. The king walks with two divine bodyguards: faithfulness and mercy.

The phrase "my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him" (emunati vechasdi immo — my faithfulness and my chesed are with him) makes both attributes POSSESSIVE: MY faithfulness. MY mercy. They belong to GOD. They accompany the king as GOD'S resources, not the king's achievements. The faithfulness isn't the king's own reliability. It's GOD'S reliability deployed on the king's behalf. The mercy isn't the king's kindness. It's GOD'S chesed walking with the king.

The phrase "in my name shall his horn be exalted" (uvishmi tarum qarno — in my name his horn will be raised/exalted) adds AUTHORITY to accompaniment: the king's HORN (power, strength, authority) is raised IN GOD'S NAME. The exaltation isn't self-generated. It's NAME-generated — the king's power rises because of WHOSE NAME it operates under. The horn is the king's. The name is God's. The power rises because the identity is divine.

The MESSIANIC reading: the faithfulness and mercy that accompany the Davidic king ultimately accompany CHRIST — the perfect king whose horn is exalted in God's name above every name (Philippians 2:9).

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What faithfulness and mercy of God are currently walking with you?
  • 2.What does these attributes being GOD'S (my faithfulness, my mercy) teach about whose resources you're operating with?
  • 3.How does the horn being exalted 'in God's name' describe power that is real but derivative?
  • 4.What combination of divine reliability AND divine kindness is producing your current security?

Devotional

MY faithfulness. MY mercy. WITH HIM. God sends two divine attributes as the king's permanent COMPANIONS: faithfulness (reliability — you can count on God) and mercy (loyal love — God's kindness doesn't expire). These aren't occasional gifts. They're COMPANIONS — present, attending, walking alongside. The king is never without God's faithfulness. The king is never without God's mercy.

The 'WITH HIM' (immo) is the PROXIMITY word: not 'available to him' or 'accessible to him' but WITH him — present, close, attending. The faithfulness and mercy don't wait at home for the king to request them. They WALK with the king. They're present at every moment, in every location, during every decision. The accompaniment is constant.

The HORN exalted 'in MY name' makes the king's power DERIVATIVE: the horn (authority, strength) rises because of the NAME it operates under. Remove God's name and the horn falls. The power isn't the king's own generation. It's God's name producing the king's authority. The exaltation is real. The source is divine. The horn is the king's. The energy is God's.

The FAITHFULNESS-MERCY pair is God's DUAL commitment: faithfulness says 'I am RELIABLE — you can count on Me.' Mercy says 'I am KIND — My response will be generous.' The combination produces CONFIDENT SECURITY: the king knows God is both dependable (won't change) and generous (won't withhold). The faithfulness prevents anxiety. The mercy prevents distance.

What faithfulness and mercy of God are CURRENTLY walking with you — and do you recognize their presence?
