- Chapter 1
- Verse 18
“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore , Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 1:18 Mean?
The risen Christ identifies himself to John with three statements: I am he that liveth (present — alive now). I was dead (past — the death was real). I am alive for evermore (future — the life never ends). Past, present, and future are covered.
"And have the keys of hell and of death" — Jesus holds the keys. He controls access to death and the grave. No one enters or exits without his permission. Death is not an autonomous power. It is a locked domain, and Jesus has the keys.
The keys represent authority, not just access. Jesus does not just survive death. He governs it. He decides when the doors open and close. Death has been reduced from a sovereign force to a locked room managed by someone else.
This verse follows John's collapse at Jesus' feet (v.17) and Jesus' reassuring touch: Fear not. The one who tells you not to fear is the one who holds the keys to the thing you fear most.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean that Jesus 'has the keys of hell and of death' — how does that change your relationship with mortality?
- 2.How do the three tenses — living, was dead, alive for evermore — capture the full gospel?
- 3.Where do you need to hear 'fear not' from the one who holds the keys?
- 4.How does Jesus governing death reduce its power over you?
Devotional
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore. Three tenses. One person. Living now. Was dead. Alive forever. The full arc of the gospel in a single sentence.
Was dead. The death was real. Not a swoon. Not a metaphor. Dead. Buried. In the grave. The most alive person in the universe experienced the most final thing in the universe.
Am alive for evermore. And then — the reversal. Not alive temporarily. Not resuscitated for a few more years. Alive for evermore. The death was three days. The life is eternal.
And have the keys of hell and of death. Keys. Authority. The thing you fear most — death — is not an uncontrolled force. It is a locked door. And the person holding the key is the one who already went through it and came back.
Fear not. That is what Jesus said right before this verse. The one who holds the keys of death says: do not be afraid. Not because death is not real. But because the one who governs it is on your side.
Death is not your master. It is a door. And the one who holds the key is alive for evermore.
