My Notes
What Does Revelation 17:5 Mean?
John sees a woman riding a scarlet beast, and on her forehead — the most public, visible part of her body — a name is written. The name is a summary of everything she is. And everything she is, is horror.
"Upon her forehead was a name written" — the forehead is the place of identification. In the ancient world, slaves and prostitutes were sometimes branded or tattooed on the forehead. The name is public, permanent, and defining. This woman doesn't hide what she is. She advertises it.
"MYSTERY" — the first word is a label for what follows. What you're about to read is a mystery — not a puzzle to solve but a hidden reality being unveiled. The name describes something that operates beneath the surface of visible history. The system this woman represents is hidden in plain sight — functioning openly but understood spiritually only by those with discernment.
"BABYLON THE GREAT" — Babylon was the empire that destroyed Jerusalem, burned the temple, and exiled God's people. In Revelation, Babylon becomes the symbol for every human system that sets itself against God — every empire of wealth, power, and religious corruption that seduces the world and oppresses the saints. The "great" isn't admiration. It's acknowledgment of scope. The system is massive.
"THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH" — she's not just a harlot. She's the mother of harlots — the origin, the source, the one who birthed every subsequent system of spiritual prostitution. Every false worship, every corrupted religion, every seductive alternative to the true God traces its lineage back to her. The abominations of the earth — the idolatries, the exploitations, the perversions of what was sacred — she mothered them all.
The woman is a system, not a single person. She represents the accumulated rebellion of human civilization — the wealth built on exploitation, the religion built on deception, the power built on the blood of saints. And her name is written on her forehead because she's not ashamed of what she is.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does 'Babylon' look like in your cultural context — what system of wealth, power, or corrupted religion is seducing your generation?
- 2.Why does the name include 'mystery'? What about Babylon's true nature is hidden beneath its attractive exterior?
- 3.What 'cup' are you drinking from that looks beautiful on the outside but might be full of abominations?
- 4.How do you develop the discernment to read the name on the forehead — to see through the seduction to the reality underneath?
Devotional
Babylon writes its name on its forehead because it's proud of what it is. The system of wealth, power, and corrupted religion that has seduced the nations since the beginning doesn't hide. It advertises. It parades. It puts its name on buildings and brands and cultural movements and says: look at me. The harlot isn't lurking in shadows. She's riding a beast through the public square, name emblazoned, cup in hand, drunk on the blood of the saints.
The word "mystery" tells you something important: the system is visible but its true nature is hidden. Babylon looks like civilization. It looks like progress. It looks like prosperity and culture and the good life. From the outside, the harlot is gorgeous — adorned in purple and scarlet, decked with gold and precious stones (verse 4). The seduction works because the exterior is beautiful. The interior — the cup full of abominations — is what you don't see until you've already drunk from it.
Mother of harlots. She didn't just commit spiritual adultery. She birthed an entire lineage of it. Every system that offers itself as a substitute for God — every ideology that promises what only God can provide, every cultural movement that demands the allegiance only God deserves — traces back to this mother. The false religions, the corrupted institutions, the systems that look life-giving and produce death — she mothered them all.
The question for you isn't whether Babylon exists. It's whether you're drinking from her cup. The seduction is real because the exterior is beautiful. The wealth is real. The pleasure is real. The cultural prestige is real. But the cup is full of abominations. And the name on the forehead — if you can read it — tells you everything you need to know about what you're swallowing.
