- Verse 16
“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 19:16 Mean?
The returning Christ is described with a name written on his vesture and on his thigh: KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. The title is the supreme superlative — the king above every king, the lord above every lord. No authority exceeds his.
The name is written — permanently inscribed, publicly displayed, undeniable. On his vesture — visible to everyone who sees him. On his thigh — the place where a warrior's sword hangs. The name is both regal and martial.
The title appears in the context of the second coming (v.11-16) — Jesus returning on a white horse, with eyes as a flame of fire, wearing many crowns, and a vesture dipped in blood. The KING OF KINGS is a warrior-king arriving to execute judgment.
The title settles every question about ultimate authority. Whatever king rules now, Jesus outranks. Whatever lord claims dominion, Jesus supersedes. The name written on his body declares the hierarchy of the universe — and he is at the top.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does the name being written on his body — vesture and thigh — communicate about permanence and visibility?
- 2.How does KING OF KINGS settle every question about competing authorities?
- 3.How does the warrior-king imagery of Revelation 19 complement the gentle-teacher imagery of the Gospels?
- 4.What power in your life needs to be measured against the name KING OF KINGS?
Devotional
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Written on his body. Not whispered. Not debated. Written — permanently, publicly, on the returning Christ for every eye to read.
King of kings. Every king who has ever reigned — every emperor, every ruler, every authority — is under this king. The title does not compete with other kings. It supersedes them all. The king above kings. The final authority.
Lord of lords. Every lord — every person, power, or system that claims dominion — is under this lord. The lordship is not shared. It is supreme. No lord outranks the one whose thigh bears this name.
The name is on his vesture — visible, public, for everyone to see. And on his thigh — where the sword hangs, where the warrior is identified. The title is both royal and military. The king is coming not just to reign. He is coming to fight — and to win.
The returning Jesus of Revelation 19 does not look like the gentle teacher of Galilee. He looks like what he has always been: the supreme authority over every authority. Eyes of fire. Many crowns. A vesture dipped in blood. And a name that settles every question about who is in charge.
Whatever power seems dominant right now — political, cultural, spiritual — has a name above it. KING OF KINGS. LORD OF LORDS. Written on the body of the one who is coming back. And when he arrives, every other claim to authority will be measured against that name — and found insufficient.
