Revelation 22:16

Revelation 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

My Notes

What Does Revelation 22:16 Mean?

Jesus identifies himself with the final self-revelation of the book: I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

I Jesus — the personal name. Not a title. Not a Christological designation. Jesus — the human name given at birth (Matthew 1:21), the name of the man from Nazareth. The speaker of the entire book of Revelation — the one who has been described in cosmic, apocalyptic, symbolic language for 22 chapters — identifies himself with the simplest, most personal name possible. I Jesus.

Have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches — the entire Revelation was transmitted through an angelic messenger (1:1). Jesus sent the angel. The authority behind every vision, every judgment, every promise in the book is Jesus himself. The churches (ekklesiai) are the recipients — the seven churches of chapters 2-3 and, by extension, every church in every age.

I am the root and the offspring of David — two directions simultaneously. The root (rhiza) of David — the source from which David came. David's root is his origin — the eternal one who existed before David and from whom David's line springs. The offspring (genos) of David — the descendant, the human heir, the one born in David's lineage. Jesus is both David's ancestor (root — his divine origin precedes David) and David's descendant (offspring — his human nature comes through David's line). He is both the source and the product of the Davidic line.

The bright and morning star (ho aster ho lampos ho proinos) — the morning star is the celestial body that appears just before dawn — the herald of a new day. Jesus is the bright morning star — the one whose appearance signals that the darkness is ending and the day is breaking. The title carries messianic weight: Numbers 24:17 prophesied a star out of Jacob. Revelation 2:28 promised the morning star to the overcomer. Now Jesus claims the title himself: I am the morning star. The dawn is coming. And I am the signal.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does Jesus identifying himself as 'I Jesus' — the personal, human name — communicate at the close of the most cosmic book in the Bible?
  • 2.How does 'root and offspring of David' hold together Christ's deity (root/source) and humanity (offspring/descendant)?
  • 3.What does the 'bright and morning star' — the herald of dawn — promise about the darkness currently covering the world?
  • 4.How does Jesus personally claiming authorship of Revelation ('I have sent mine angel') change the way you read the book?

Devotional

I Jesus. After twenty-two chapters of apocalyptic vision — thrones, seals, trumpets, bowls, beasts, angels, and cosmic war — the speaker identifies himself with two simple words. I Jesus. The human name. The personal name. The name his mother called him. The most exalted being in the universe identifies himself with the most intimate name he has. Not King of kings (though he is). Not Alpha and Omega (though he is). Jesus. I Jesus.

I am the root and the offspring of David. Both. The root — the source, the origin, the one who existed before David and from whom David's entire line springs. And the offspring — the descendant, the human heir, the baby born in Bethlehem in David's lineage. Jesus is both David's creator and David's grandson. Both David's God and David's son. The mystery of the incarnation in one phrase: root and offspring. Source and product. Before David and after David. Eternal God and human descendant.

The bright and morning star. The star that appears just before dawn. The light that signals the end of the longest night. When you see the morning star, you know: the sun is coming. The darkness is almost over. The day is breaking.

Jesus is the morning star. His appearance — in the gospel, in your life, in the final revelation — signals that the night is ending. The darkness that has covered the world since Genesis 3 is breaking. The dawn is imminent. And the one who announces it is the one who brings it. He does not just herald the morning. He is the morning.

I Jesus. Root and offspring of David. Bright and morning star. The most cosmic and the most intimate. The most exalted and the most personal. The one who holds the universe and the one who says his own name to the churches. I Jesus. He wants you to know who is speaking. And he wants you to know: the morning is coming.
