“And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 22:19 Mean?
"And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." The final WARNING of Revelation — and of the entire Bible: if anyone TAKES AWAY from the words of this prophecy, God will TAKE AWAY their part from the book of life, from the holy city, and from the promises written in this book. The TAKING AWAY is RECIPROCAL: you subtract from the book, God subtracts from your inheritance. The proportionality is exact. The consequence matches the crime.
The phrase "take away from the words of the book of this prophecy" (aphairē apo tōn logōn tou bibliou tēs prophēteias tautēs — removes from the words of the scroll of this prophecy) describes SUBTRACTION from Scripture: the removing of words, the deletion of passages, the reduction of the text. The crime isn't misunderstanding. It's REMOVING — deliberately subtracting content from the prophetic book. The diminishing of Scripture is the offense.
The triple consequence — "God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book" — makes the penalty COMPREHENSIVE: loss of LIFE (removed from the book of life), loss of PLACE (removed from the holy city), and loss of PROMISES (removed from the things written). Everything the book OFFERS is withdrawn from the person who SUBTRACTS from the book. The book-subtractor loses the book's benefits.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Do you treat Scripture's words as untouchable — or are you subtracting what's inconvenient?
- 2.What does the consequence MATCHING the crime (you subtract, God subtracts) teach about reciprocal judgment?
- 3.What does this being the LAST substantive warning in the Bible teach about its importance?
- 4.What triple loss (life, city, promises) would result from diminishing the text — and does that stop you?
Devotional
Take away from this book — God takes away from YOUR inheritance. Your part in the book of life. Your place in the holy city. Your share in the promises. The consequence matches the crime: you subtract from Scripture, God subtracts from your future. The reciprocity is exact. The warning is final.
The 'take away from the words' targets DELIBERATE SUBTRACTION: the crime isn't accidental misreading. It's REMOVING — deliberately deleting, intentionally subtracting, purposefully reducing the words of the prophecy. The person who finds parts of Revelation inconvenient and REMOVES them is the person this warning addresses. The subtraction is the sin. The reduction is the crime.
The TRIPLE loss covers EVERYTHING the book promises: loss from the BOOK OF LIFE (the record of the saved — your name is removed). Loss from the HOLY CITY (the New Jerusalem — your place is removed). Loss from the THINGS WRITTEN IN THIS BOOK (every promise Revelation contains — your share is removed). The three losses together are TOTAL: you lose salvation (book of life), you lose the eternal dwelling (holy city), and you lose every benefit (things written). The subtraction from the book produces subtraction from EVERYTHING.
The WARNING is the LAST substantive statement in the Bible: the final warning of the final book of the final chapter. The LAST thing Scripture says before the benediction (verse 21 — 'the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all') is: DON'T SUBTRACT. The position of the warning — at the very END — gives it maximum emphasis. The last word before 'amen' is: don't touch the text.
Do you treat Scripture's words as UNTOUCHABLE — or are you subtracting what makes you uncomfortable?
