Romans 8:15

Romans 8:15
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

My Notes

What Does Romans 8:15 Mean?

Paul contrasts two spirits the believer has encountered: for ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The spirit of bondage — the condition of being enslaved under law, where every failure produces fear of punishment. The word again (palin) implies they once lived under this spirit. The law produced awareness of sin but no power to overcome it — resulting in bondage and fear. Paul says: you did not receive that spirit again. The old slavery is over.

But ye have received the Spirit of adoption (huiothesia) — the legal act of placing as a son. Roman adoption was irrevocable and gave the adopted child full legal rights as heir. The Spirit believers received is not a spirit of servitude but the Spirit who makes them children of God with full inheritance rights.

Whereby we cry, Abba, Father — the Spirit's presence produces an instinctive cry: Abba. This is the Aramaic intimate term for father — not formal, not distant. The same word Jesus used in Gethsemane (Mark 14:36). The Spirit of adoption gives believers the same access to the Father that Christ himself has. The cry is not learned behavior. It is Spirit-generated intimacy.

Galatians 4:6 parallels this: God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. The Spirit within the believer is the Spirit of the Son — and that Spirit naturally cries out to the Father with the same intimacy the Son has always known.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What is the difference between approaching God with a spirit of bondage and a Spirit of adoption?
  • 2.How does understanding adoption as irrevocable change the security of your relationship with God?
  • 3.What does the cry 'Abba, Father' — intimate, unguarded, trusting — reveal about the access the Spirit gives you?
  • 4.Where does fear still drive your relationship with God in ways that contradict your adoption?

Devotional

Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. Whatever fear used to drive your relationship with God — fear of punishment, fear of failure, fear that one wrong step would cost you everything — that spirit is not from God. You did not receive it. The bondage, the dread, the anxious religion that kept you performing out of terror — that is the old system. And you are not in it anymore.

But ye have received the Spirit of adoption. Adoption. Full, legal, irrevocable adoption. You are not God's employee. You are not God's project. You are God's child — placed as a daughter with full inheritance rights. The Spirit you received is not a spirit that makes you cower. It is a Spirit that makes you belong.

Whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Abba — the intimate, close, unguarded word for father. Not the formal title you use with someone you are trying to impress. The word you use with someone you trust completely. The Spirit of adoption produces this cry naturally. You do not have to manufacture closeness with God. The Spirit creates it. The intimacy is his work, not your effort.

If your relationship with God still feels like bondage — if you approach him with dread, perform for him out of fear, and believe that one failure will undo everything — you are living under a spirit you did not receive. The Spirit you received says Abba. The Spirit you received makes you a daughter, not a slave. The fear is the old system talking. The adoption is the reality.
