Courage · Decisive Action · Unlikely Hero · Deliverance

Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

Judges 5:24

A woman who fulfilled Deborah's prophecy by defeating the Canaanite general Sisera, celebrated as 'blessed above women' in the Song of Deborah.

Her Story

When the Canaanite general Sisera fled from the battlefield after his army was routed by Barak and Deborah, he sought refuge in the tent of Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite. Jael invited him in, gave him milk and a blanket, and when he fell asleep exhausted, she drove a tent peg through his temple. Her act fulfilled Deborah's prophecy that the glory of the victory would go to a woman. In the Song of Deborah, Jael is praised as 'blessed above women' for her decisive courage. Her story, while violent, shows how God used an unlikely heroine — not a soldier or a judge, but a woman in her own tent — to deliver His people.
