“By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.”
— Hebrews 11:31
A Canaanite woman whose faith in the God of Israel saved her family and placed her in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
Her Story
Rahab was a Canaanite woman living in Jericho when the Israelite spies came to scout the city. Though she had every reason to turn them in, she chose to hide them instead, declaring her faith: 'I know that the LORD hath given you the land.' She asked for protection for her family, and the spies agreed, telling her to hang a scarlet cord from her window. When Jericho's walls fell, Rahab and her household were spared. She married into the tribe of Judah and became the great-great-grandmother of King David — and an ancestor of Jesus. Rahab is celebrated in Hebrews 11 alongside Abraham and Moses, proof that God's grace extends to anyone who puts their faith in Him, regardless of their past.
