“Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”
— Ruth 1:16
A Moabite woman whose fierce loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi led her to Israel, to Boaz, and into the lineage of King David and Jesus.
Her Story
Ruth was a Moabite woman who married into an Israelite family. When her husband died, her mother-in-law Naomi urged her to return to her own people. But Ruth spoke the immortal words: 'Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.' She left everything familiar and traveled to Bethlehem with Naomi, where she humbly gleaned grain in the fields to provide for them both. There she met Boaz, a kinsman-redeemer who showed her extraordinary kindness. Their marriage produced Obed, the grandfather of King David. Ruth, a foreign woman who chose faith and loyalty, was grafted into the very lineage of the Messiah. Her book is one of only two in the Bible named after a woman.
