The Samaritan Woman

Living Water

John
Transformation · Acceptance · Evangelism · Living Water

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.

John 4:13-14

A woman with a complicated past who met Jesus at a well and became one of the first evangelists — bringing her entire town to hear Him.

Her Story

Jesus broke multiple social conventions when He sat by Jacob's well and asked a Samaritan woman for a drink. Jews did not associate with Samaritans, and men did not speak to women in public. But Jesus engaged her in one of the deepest theological conversations recorded in the Gospels. He offered her 'living water' that would become a spring of eternal life. When He revealed that He knew about her five previous husbands and current relationship, she recognized Him as a prophet — and then He told her directly that He was the Messiah, something He had not yet declared so plainly to anyone else. She left her water jar and ran to the city, telling everyone, 'Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?' Many Samaritans believed because of her testimony.
