“And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,”
My Notes
What Does 1 Chronicles 16:39 Mean?
"And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon." A remarkable detail unique to Chronicles: while the ark is in JERUSALEM (in David's tent), the TABERNACLE remains at GIBEON. The worship infrastructure is SPLIT — God's ark in one city, God's tabernacle in another. Two locations, two sets of priests, two worship-centers operating simultaneously. The sacred geography is divided until Solomon builds the temple.
The phrase "before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon" (liphnei mishkan YHWH babbamah asher beGiv'on — before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place which is in Gibeon) locates the Mosaic tabernacle at GIBEON: the original wilderness worship-structure — made at Sinai, carried through the wilderness, set up at Shiloh — now sits at Gibeon. The ark has been separated from its tabernacle. The throne (mercy seat) and the house (tabernacle) are in different cities.
The SPLIT creates a theological tension: the tabernacle has the altar of burnt offering (where sacrifices are made). The ark has the mercy seat (where God's presence dwells). The system of worship — sacrifice and presence — is geographically DIVIDED. The sacrifices happen at Gibeon. The presence dwells in Jerusalem. The two elements that belong together are temporarily apart.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What elements of your spiritual life are split across different locations — and what would reunification look like?
- 2.What does the altar and the ark being in different cities teach about worship systems that are functional but incomplete?
- 3.How does Solomon's temple REUNIFYING what was separated describe the purpose of building something new?
- 4.What 'Gibeon' (legitimate but temporary worship-site) are you using until the permanent structure is built?
Devotional
The ark is in JERUSALEM. The tabernacle is at GIBEON. The two halves of Israel's worship system are in DIFFERENT CITIES. Zadok serves at Gibeon with the tabernacle and the altar. David worships in Jerusalem before the ark. The sacrifice-system and the presence-system are geographically separated. The worship is SPLIT.
This SPLIT is the theological tension David lives with: the altar of burnt offering (where sin is addressed through sacrifice) is at Gibeon. The mercy seat (where God's presence dwells above the cherubim) is in Jerusalem. The two things that BELONG TOGETHER — sacrifice and presence — are APART. The system is functional but not unified. Both locations operate. Neither location has everything.
The split will be RESOLVED by Solomon: when the temple is built, the ark and the altar will share the same building. The presence and the sacrifice will be reunited in one structure. Solomon's temple isn't just architectural achievement. It's theological REUNIFICATION — bringing together what has been geographically divided.
The Chronicler records this split to explain the GIBEON connection: when Solomon goes to Gibeon to sacrifice (2 Chronicles 1:3-6) and receives his wisdom-dream, he goes because the TABERNACLE is there. The high place at Gibeon isn't pagan. It's the location of the Mosaic tabernacle. The 'high place' that seems questionable is actually the authorized worship-site — until the temple is built.
What elements of your worship life are SPLIT across different locations or practices — and what would reunification look like?
