“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”
My Notes
What Does 1 Corinthians 12:7 Mean?
Paul states a universal principle about spiritual gifts: the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every believer for the common profit. Three elements: the Spirit manifests (makes visible), the gift is given (not earned), and the purpose is mutual benefit (not personal status).
The word "manifestation" (phanerosis — a making visible, a disclosure) means spiritual gifts are the Spirit making himself visible through you. The gift isn't your skill or personality enhanced; it's the Spirit's activity expressed through your particular vessel. You are the display case; the Spirit is the display.
The phrase "to profit withal" (pros to sumpheron — for the common benefit, for what brings together) establishes that gifts are communal, not individual. The Spirit gives a gift through you for the benefit of others. Using a gift for personal advantage or status reverses its purpose. The gift was never about you.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What gift has the Spirit manifested through you — and are you using it for the common benefit?
- 2.How does understanding gifts as 'the Spirit making himself visible' change how you view your own abilities?
- 3.Where might you be using a spiritual gift for personal advantage rather than communal profit?
- 4.If every believer has a manifestation, what does it mean that you might not have identified yours yet?
Devotional
The Spirit shows up through every believer. The manifestation is given to every person. Not some. Not the impressive ones. Not the leaders. Every believer has a Spirit-manifestation — a way the Spirit makes himself visible through their life.
The word "manifestation" is the key: the Spirit is invisible. He works inside, behind the scenes, in the depths of the heart. But through the gifts, he becomes visible. When you prophesy, the Spirit is visible. When you serve, the Spirit is visible. When you teach, encourage, give, lead — the Spirit becomes manifest. Your gift is the Spirit's visibility project.
The purpose — "to profit withal" (for the common benefit) — eliminates every self-centered use of gifts. The Spirit didn't give you a gift so you could feel special, so others could admire you, or so you could build a platform. The gift was given for the group. The community profits. The body benefits. The purpose is collective, not individual.
This should both encourage and humble you. Encourage: you have a manifestation. The Spirit expresses himself through you in a specific, identifiable way. You're not giftless. You're not Spirit-less. The manifestation is given to every person. Humble: the manifestation isn't for your benefit. It's for others. The moment you use a spiritual gift for self-promotion, you've reversed its God-given direction.
What is the Spirit making visible through you? And who is benefiting from it?
