“But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.”
My Notes
What Does 1 Corinthians 7:17 Mean?
Paul establishes a principle of contentment in calling: whatever situation God has distributed to you, whatever circumstance the Lord called you in — walk in that. Don't assume you need a complete life overhaul to serve God. The calling sanctifies the circumstance, not the other way around.
The phrase "as God hath distributed" (merizo — to divide, to allot, to assign a portion) frames your life situation as a divine assignment. Your current circumstances aren't accidental; they're allotted. The married person, the single person, the slave, the free, the circumcised, the uncircumcised — each received a portion from God, and each can serve God in that portion.
The universal application — "so ordain I in all churches" — makes this a standard teaching, not a Corinth-specific instruction. Every church, everywhere, receives the same principle: bloom where you're planted. The calling of Christ reaches you where you are and doesn't require you to be somewhere else first.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What circumstance are you trying to escape that God might be asking you to serve in?
- 2.How does viewing your situation as 'distributed by God' change your relationship with your current reality?
- 3.What's the difference between contentment in calling and passive acceptance of circumstances?
- 4.Where do you need to stop waiting for a better situation and start walking in the one you have?
Devotional
Walk in what you were given. Paul's instruction is almost annoyingly simple: whatever situation you were in when God called you, that's where you serve. Don't wait for a better circumstance, a different marriage, a new career, a different city. Walk where you are.
The word "distributed" means God assigned your portion. Your current situation — however frustrating, however unexpected, however different from what you planned — was allotted. Not randomly. Distributed. The life you're living right now is the portion God gave you to work with.
This isn't fatalism. Paul isn't saying nothing should ever change (verse 21 acknowledges that a slave should take freedom if it's offered). He's saying your ability to serve God doesn't depend on having the right circumstances. The single person can serve God as a single person. The married person can serve God as a married person. The employee can serve God as an employee. The calling meets you where you are and doesn't require relocation to begin.
The phrase "so ordain I in all churches" makes this universal. Every church, every culture, every situation receives the same principle: contentment in your calling. The Corinthians thought they needed to change their entire life situation to be spiritual. Paul says: the situation you're in is your mission field. The calling sanctifies the circumstance, not the other way around.
What situation have you been trying to escape when God might be asking you to serve right where you are?
