1 Samuel

Old Testament

Summary

Samuel's story begins before he was born. His mother Hannah had been unable to have children for years and prayed with such raw anguish in the temple that a priest thought she was drunk. She vowed to give her son back to God if God gave her one. Samuel was born, and she kept her word.

Samuel grows up to become Israel's most trusted prophet. When the people demand a king, he reluctantly anoints Saul — a head-taller-than-everyone man who starts with real promise and slowly unravels. Saul disobeys God at critical moments, grows paranoid, and loses the thread of who he was supposed to be.

Quietly, God sends Samuel to anoint a replacement: David, the youngest of eight brothers, still smelling like sheep. The famous scene where David kills Goliath happens here — not as the conclusion of the story, but near the beginning of his rise.

The back half of the book is a chase narrative. Saul tries repeatedly to kill David. David runs. Their relationship is one of the most psychologically complex in the Bible — envy, love, fear, obsession all braided together — and it ends only with Saul's death on the battlefield.

Devotional

Hannah's prayer is the first sound in this book, and it sets a tone for everything that follows. She wasn't performing for anyone. She was devastated and desperate, and she poured all of it out — moving her lips without making a sound.

God heard her. That matters. Not because she said the right words or had perfect faith, but because she showed up with everything she actually had.

The contrast between Saul and David runs through the whole book, and it is not really about talent. Saul had everything — the looks, the height, the public approval. What he lacked was the ability to trust God when it didn't make sense to. David, even as a teenager facing a giant, operated from a different center.

That line — "people look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart" — isn't a greeting card sentiment. It's an explanation for why an overlooked shepherd boy gets chosen over his impressive older brothers.

What does God see when He looks at your heart right now? Not your public self, not your Sunday-morning self. The real, underneath version. First Samuel suggests that's exactly what He is working with — and somehow, it is enough.

Historical Background

First Samuel was written by an unknown author, possibly drawing from records kept by the prophets Samuel, Nathan, and Gad. It covers roughly 1100 to 1010 BCE — a hinge point in Israel's history when the people demanded a king and God said yes, with a warning.

Up until this point, Israel had been governed loosely by judges and priests. The people looked at neighboring nations with their impressive kings and armies and wanted the same thing. God warned them it would cost them dearly. They said yes anyway.

First Samuel comes after the quiet story of Ruth and leads into 2 Samuel, which picks up David's reign. It is the book where Israel's monarchy is born — messy and complicated from the very start.

You will meet a weeping mother, a prophet, two kings, and a giant. Samuel is the last of the judges and the first to anoint kings. Saul is Israel's first king — promising and ultimately tragic. David enters as a shepherd boy and becomes impossible to overlook.
