My Notes
What Does 2 Chronicles 32:33 Mean?
"And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead." Hezekiah's burial is the OPPOSITE of his father Ahaz's: where Ahaz was EXCLUDED from the royal tombs (28:27), Hezekiah is placed in the CHIEFEST — the highest, most honored position among the Davidic burials. The community's verdict is opposite for father and son. The excluded father and the exalted son share the same bloodline but receive opposite honors.
The phrase "the chiefest of the sepulchres" (bema'aleh qivrei benei David — in the ascent/upper part of the tombs of the sons of David) places Hezekiah at the TOP of the royal cemetery: the highest position, the most honored spot, the place reserved for the greatest kings. The burial location is the community's FINAL EVALUATION — and Hezekiah receives the highest grade. The tomb is the report card.
The phrase "Manasseh his son reigned in his stead" is the DEVASTATING contrast: the best king is followed by the WORST king. Hezekiah in the chiefest tomb is succeeded by Manasseh — who will undo every reform, rebuild every high place, and fill Jerusalem with blood (2 Kings 21:16). The honored burial gives way to the dishonorable reign. The father's tomb and the son's throne represent opposite spiritual trajectories.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What legacy are you building — and what ensures it survives the generation after you?
- 2.What does Ahaz excluded and Hezekiah exalted (same family, opposite burials) teach about individual evaluation within families?
- 3.How does the BEST king being followed by the WORST describe the fragility of reform across generations?
- 4.What 'chiefest tomb' are you earning — and what 'Manasseh' might follow?
Devotional
Hezekiah is buried in the CHIEFEST tomb — the highest honor among the kings of David. All Judah and Jerusalem honor him at death. The community gives its FINAL VERDICT: this king was the best. The burial-location says what the kingdom felt — Hezekiah deserves the TOP spot among the Davidic kings.
The CONTRAST with Ahaz couldn't be sharper: Ahaz was EXCLUDED from the royal tombs (28:27). Hezekiah receives the HIGHEST position in the same tombs. Father excluded. Son exalted. Same family. Same tombs. Opposite placements. The community's evaluation of the two reigns is encoded in the burial geography.
Then the devastating final phrase: 'Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.' The BEST king is followed by the WORST. The reform is followed by the destruction. The highest burial is followed by the lowest reign. Hezekiah lies in the chiefest tomb while Manasseh rebuilds every high place Hezekiah tore down. The father's legacy is undone by the son's choices.
This is the PAINFUL pattern of Kings and Chronicles: faithfulness doesn't transfer automatically. Hezekiah's reform couldn't protect against Manasseh's apostasy. The best reign in Judah's history was immediately followed by the worst. The children of the faithful aren't guaranteed to BE faithful. The tomb honors the father. The throne dishonors the son.
What highest-honor legacy are you building — and what are you doing to ensure it survives the next generation?
