2 Corinthians 5:18

2 Corinthians 5:18
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

My Notes

What Does 2 Corinthians 5:18 Mean?

2 Corinthians 5:18 contains two gifts in one verse: reconciliation received and reconciliation commissioned. "All things are of God" — ta panta ek tou theou — everything originates from God. The reconciliation wasn't a human initiative. It wasn't a negotiation where both parties came to the table. God started it, designed it, and executed it.

"Who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ" — katallaxantos hēmas heautō dia Christou. The word katallassō means to change, to exchange, to restore a broken relationship. The direction is crucial: God reconciled us to Himself. We didn't reconcile ourselves. We didn't meet God halfway. He did the full work of bridging the gap, and He did it through Christ. The enmity was on our side; the initiative was on His.

"And hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation" — diakonian tēs katallagēs. Having been reconciled, we're now commissioned as reconcilers. The gift becomes a calling. What God did for you, He now does through you. You carry the message that made you whole into the lives of people who are still fractured. The ministry isn't optional — it's the natural overflow of having been reconciled. If you've been brought back to God, you're now in the business of bringing others back.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does it change your understanding of salvation to know that God reconciled you — not the other way around?
  • 2.What does the 'ministry of reconciliation' look like in your everyday life — not just in church, but at work, at home, in conflict?
  • 3.Is there a relationship in your life where you need to carry God's reconciling posture right now?
  • 4.How do you share the message of reconciliation without sounding preachy or pushy?

Devotional

God didn't wait for you to come to Him. He came to you. That's reconciliation — and it's entirely His idea.

"All things are of God." The whole thing started with Him. The broken relationship between you and God wasn't repaired because you finally figured out the right prayer or achieved the right level of goodness. God reconciled you to Himself. He crossed the gap. He absorbed the cost. He made the first move and every move after that. Through Christ — not through your effort, your sincerity, or your spiritual track record.

But here's where the verse turns from gift to mission: "and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation." The reconciliation you received isn't meant to stay with you. It's meant to flow through you. God didn't just save you and set you on a shelf. He saved you and put you to work — not as a laborer earning wages, but as someone who carries the same message that rescued you into every room you walk into.

That means every conversation is potentially a reconciliation opportunity. Every relationship is a chance to carry the posture of the God who bridged gaps. Every conflict, every fracture, every person who feels far from God — you've been given a ministry to those spaces. Not because you're qualified, but because you've been reconciled. You know what it feels like. Now you carry it forward.
