“Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 8:20 Mean?
"Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us." Paul PROACTIVELY prevents accusation: he structures the financial handling so that NO ONE can blame him. The word 'avoiding' (stellomenoi — arranging, taking precaution, deliberately positioning) means Paul ENGINEERS the transparency. He doesn't wait for accusations and then defend himself. He builds the system so accusations CAN'T arise. The prevention is the strategy. The structure is the defense.
The phrase "that no man should blame us" (mē tis hēmas mōmēsētai — that no one might censure/blame us) identifies the SPECIFIC concern: blame about MONEY. Paul anticipates that handling LARGE amounts of donated funds (the 'abundance' — hadrotēs, a substantial/generous amount) creates VULNERABILITY to accusation. The larger the amount, the greater the potential for suspicion. Paul structures the process to eliminate the possibility.
The "this abundance which is administered by us" (en tē hadrotēti tautē tē diakonoumenē hyph' hēmōn — in this abundance/generous amount being administered by us) acknowledges the SIZE of the collection and the RISK it creates: the collection for Jerusalem is SUBSTANTIAL. Paul is managing SIGNIFICANT funds. The 'administered by us' means the money passes through Paul's hands. And Paul deliberately arranges that the handling is BEYOND REPROACH.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What system have you built to prevent blame — not just defend against it after the fact?
- 2.What does PROACTIVE integrity (engineering the system) differ from reactive integrity (defending after accusation)?
- 3.How does financial accountability being about APPEARANCE as well as REALITY serve credibility?
- 4.What abundance are you administering that needs structural transparency — not just personal trustworthiness?
Devotional
Paul ENGINEERS the transparency so nobody CAN blame him. He doesn't wait for accusations. He builds the system to PREVENT them. The handling of the collection is structured so that blame is IMPOSSIBLE — not because Paul is above suspicion but because the SYSTEM removes the opportunity for suspicion.
The 'avoiding this' (stellomenoi — taking precaution, deliberately arranging) is PROACTIVE integrity: Paul doesn't react to accusations. He PREVENTS them. The financial system is designed IN ADVANCE to eliminate the possibility of blame. The precaution is deliberate. The arrangement is intentional. The structure is the defense. The system is the shield.
The 'that no man should blame us' identifies FINANCIAL REPUTATION as worth protecting: Paul cares about how the money-handling APPEARS — not just how it IS but how it's PERCEIVED. The reality of integrity isn't enough if the APPEARANCE creates suspicion. The apostle who handles large amounts must be BEYOND REPROACH — not just honest but DEMONSTRABLY honest. The 'no man should blame' means the system must satisfy EVERY potential critic.
The 'this abundance administered by us' acknowledges the RISK: large amounts of money create large amounts of vulnerability. The more money you manage, the more opportunity for accusation. Paul SEES the risk and ADDRESSES it structurally — not through personal defense ('trust me') but through SYSTEMIC transparency (elected escorts, church-chosen accountability partners, visible processes). The defense is STRUCTURAL, not personal.
What system have you built to PREVENT blame — not just defend against it?
