2 Corinthians 8:5

2 Corinthians 8:5
And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

My Notes

What Does 2 Corinthians 8:5 Mean?

Paul describes the Macedonian churches' generosity with a surprising detail: "first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us." Before they gave money, they gave themselves. The self-giving preceded and exceeded the financial giving. The offering wasn't an addition to their relationship with God; it was an expression of it.

The phrase "not as we hoped" suggests Paul's expectations were exceeded, not disappointed. He hoped for financial generosity; they gave something more: themselves. The financial gift came from people who had already surrendered their entire selves. The money was the overflow of a prior, more fundamental offering.

The order — first to the Lord, then to us — establishes the hierarchy: the self-giving to God is primary; the self-giving to Paul's ministry is secondary. They didn't give themselves to Paul because Paul asked. They gave themselves to the Lord, and from that surrender, generosity toward the apostolic mission flowed naturally.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Have you given yourself to the Lord — or just your resources?
  • 2.What's the difference between giving money and giving yourself?
  • 3.How does the order (self first, resources second) change the nature of generosity?
  • 4.Where are you giving financially without the prior self-surrender that makes giving meaningful?

Devotional

They gave themselves first. Before the money. Before the offering. Before any financial commitment — they gave their own selves to the Lord. And from that self-surrender, everything else flowed.

Paul expected money. He got people. The Macedonian churches didn't write a check and call it generosity. They surrendered themselves — their bodies, their time, their futures — and the financial gift was just the receipt for a transaction that had already happened at a much deeper level.

The order matters: first to the Lord, then to us. The self-giving to God is the foundation. The generosity toward Paul's mission is the fruit. You can't reverse it. You can't give yourself to a ministry without first giving yourself to the Lord. If you try, the giving is transactional — I donate to your cause because your cause aligns with my values. But when you give yourself to God first, the giving that follows is overflow. You're not funding a project; you're expressing a surrender.

"Not as we hoped" is the detail that reveals the surprise. Paul hoped for money (the Jerusalem collection was his explicit goal). What he received was more: people who had given themselves completely and were now giving their resources from that place of totality. The money came from surrendered people, which means the money carried the weight of surrender with it.

Before you calculate your next offering — financial, time, talent — ask: have I given myself first? The gift means nothing without the giver. The check means nothing without the check-writer's heart. Give yourself to the Lord first. The rest follows.
