What Does Acts 14:16 Mean?
"Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways." Paul explains to the Lycaonians that God permitted the nations to follow their own paths in previous generations. The permission wasn't approval — it was patience. God let the nations walk in their own ways while preparing the fullness of time when the gospel would reach them.
The phrase "suffered" (eao — to permit, to allow, to let alone) describes divine restraint. God didn't stop the nations from their idolatry. He didn't intervene to correct every theological error. He allowed the nations to walk their own paths — not because the paths were right but because the timing for correction hadn't arrived.
The past tense — "in times past" — implies the permission has expired. The previous generations walked their own ways. This generation doesn't get that option. The gospel has arrived. The time of permitted ignorance is over. What was allowed before is now being corrected.

Devotional
God let the nations walk their own way. For generations. For centuries. He didn't stop them. He didn't correct every error. He permitted the wandering — and then He sent the gospel.
The permission wasn't approval. God didn't watch the nations worship Zeus and think: that's fine. He watched and waited. The nations walked their own ways, and those ways led to exactly the confusion Paul is now addressing: a crowd trying to sacrifice oxen to missionaries. The permission produced the mess. The gospel addresses the mess.
The past tense is the critical detail: in times past. Not anymore. The previous era's permission has expired. What God allowed before — walking in your own ways, following your own paths, constructing your own religions — He's now correcting through the gospel. The time of tolerated ignorance is finished. The announcement has been made. The excuse of 'nobody told us' no longer applies.
This is the theological basis for world mission: the permission has expired. The nations are no longer allowed to walk in ignorance because the truth has been proclaimed. Every generation after the gospel is accountable for the gospel, whether or not they've personally heard it, because the message has been sent.
