Acts 17:13

Acts 17:13
But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

My Notes

What Does Acts 17:13 Mean?

The Thessalonian Jews hear that Paul is preaching in Berea — and they travel there to shut him down. Not content with driving Paul from their own city, they pursue him to the next one to stir up trouble there too. The opposition follows the gospel.

The Bereans had been receiving the word with openness, searching the Scriptures daily to verify Paul's message (verse 11). The Thessalonian opposition wasn't theological. It was territorial — they couldn't stand the gospel succeeding anywhere. Their hostility wasn't local. It was mobile.

The pattern is consistent: wherever the gospel advances, opposition mobilizes. The word is preached in Thessalonica — riots follow. Paul moves to Berea — the Thessalonian Jews follow. The gospel can't move without resistance chasing it.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Have you experienced opposition that 'followed' you from one place to the next — hostility that was mobile, not local?
  • 2.Does knowing the enemy chases what's bearing fruit change how you interpret persistent opposition?
  • 3.How do you keep preaching when the Thessalonian Jews keep showing up at your Berea?
  • 4.What does the pattern (gospel first, opposition second) teach about the order of spiritual warfare?

Devotional

The opposition didn't stay home. They traveled to the next city to stir up trouble there too.

Paul left Thessalonica because of persecution. He went to Berea, where the reception was better — the Bereans actually examined the Scriptures to see if Paul was right. It was working. People were believing. And then the Thessalonian Jews showed up. They couldn't tolerate the gospel succeeding, even in someone else's city.

There's a specific malice in this: not just opposing the message where you are, but pursuing it where it goes. The gospel moved. The opposition moved with it. The enemies of the truth weren't content with a local victory. They wanted total suppression.

This is still how it works. When God opens a door somewhere new — a new community, a new conversation, a new opportunity — don't be surprised if old opposition follows you there. The enemies of your calling are mobile. They don't respect city limits.

But notice: the opposition arrives after the gospel. Not before. The word was preached first. People believed first. The stirring up came second. The gospel always gets a head start. The enemy is always playing catch-up.

Don't let the pursuit discourage you. The fact that opposition followed you to Berea means Berea matters. The enemy doesn't chase things that aren't working. He chases what's bearing fruit.

Keep preaching. They'll keep following. But the word keeps getting there first.
