My Notes
What Does Acts 20:28 Mean?
Paul addresses the elders of the Ephesian church with urgent pastoral language: take heed to yourselves and to all the flock. The warning is both self-directed and other-directed. Watch your own soul and watch those entrusted to your care.
The Holy Ghost has made them overseers — the appointment to leadership is not human but divine. God placed them in this role through his Spirit. The responsibility is weighty because the authority is supernatural.
"Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood" is one of the most theologically packed phrases in the New Testament. The church belongs to God. It was purchased — bought at a price. And the price was his own blood.
The implication for leaders: you are caring for something God bought with blood. The flock is not yours. It is his. And he paid for it with everything. Handle accordingly.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Why does Paul tell leaders to 'take heed to yourselves' before addressing the flock?
- 2.What does it mean that the church was 'purchased with his own blood' — how should that change how we treat it?
- 3.How does knowing the Holy Spirit appointed leaders change your view of church leadership?
- 4.Where might you be handling God's blood-bought people carelessly?
Devotional
Take heed unto yourselves. Paul starts with the leaders, not the flock. Before you can care for others, you must care for your own soul. A shepherd who neglects his own spiritual health will eventually harm the sheep.
The Holy Ghost hath made you overseers. You were not elected by a committee. You were placed by the Spirit. That is both an honor and a burden — the authority comes from God, and so does the accountability.
Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. The church is not a human institution. It is God's purchased possession — bought with blood that belonged to God himself. Every person in every pew was bought at an infinite price.
That changes how you lead. You are not managing your organization. You are shepherding God's blood-bought people. The way you treat them reflects what you think the blood was worth.
Whether you are a formal leader or simply someone who influences others — Paul's warning applies: take heed. The people around you were purchased at a price you cannot imagine. Handle with corresponding care.
