“Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.”
My Notes
What Does Acts 26:5 Mean?
"Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee." Paul appeals to the KNOWLEDGE of his accusers: they KNEW him — from the BEGINNING, from his earliest days. If they were WILLING to testify honestly, they'd confirm that Paul lived as a PHARISEE — the most STRICT sect of Judaism. The accusers' own memory vindicates the accused. The prosecution's own knowledge supports the defense.
The phrase "which knew me from the beginning" (proginōskontes me anōthen — knowing me from the first/from above/from the beginning) means Paul's HISTORY is PUBLIC: his opponents KNEW him before his conversion. They watched him grow up. They saw him study. They witnessed his Pharisaic zeal. The knowledge is FIRSTHAND and HISTORICAL. The accusers can't claim ignorance of Paul's background because they WITNESSED it.
The "most straitest sect of our religion" (tēn akribestatēn hairesin tēs hēmeteras thrēskeias — the most exact/strict sect of our religion) identifies the Pharisees as the STRICTEST: the word akribestatēn means most precise, most exact, most rigorous. The Pharisees were the MOST OBSERVANT group in Judaism. Paul didn't practice a casual form of Judaism. He practiced the MOST RIGOROUS one. The strictness is the credential.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What would your accusers confirm about you — if they were willing to tell the truth?
- 2.What does Paul's opponents KNOWING him from the beginning teach about public history being its own defense?
- 3.How does the accusers' unwillingness to testify honestly expose the prosecution's dishonesty?
- 4.What does leaving the STRICTEST sect (not a casual one) teach about the seriousness of Paul's conversion?
Devotional
They KNEW me from the beginning. If they were willing to TESTIFY honestly, they'd confirm: I lived as a Pharisee — the STRICTEST sect of our religion. Paul's defense appeals to his ACCUSERS' own knowledge: you KNOW my history. You WATCHED me grow up. You SAW my devotion. If you'd be honest, your own memory would defend me.
The 'knew me from the beginning' makes the accusers EYEWITNESSES to Paul's character: they can't claim Paul was always a troublemaker. They can't pretend he was always a rebel. They KNEW him — from the BEGINNING, from his earliest days in Judaism. The knowledge is firsthand. The history is public. The accusers' own memory contains the defense's strongest evidence.
The 'if they would testify' is the conditional that exposes the UNWILLINGNESS: the knowledge EXISTS. The testimony COULD be given. The evidence WOULD support Paul. But the accusers WON'T testify — because honest testimony would undermine their prosecution. The 'if they would' acknowledges that the accusers HAVE the information but WON'T SHARE it. The knowledge is available. The willingness is absent.
The 'most straitest sect' claims the HIGHEST possible Jewish credential: Paul wasn't a casual Jew. He was a PHARISEE — the most rigorous, most observant, most exacting sect. The strictness is the defense: I didn't ABANDON Judaism carelessly. I practiced it at its HIGHEST level. The Pharisee who became a Christian didn't leave a casual faith. He left the MOST DEMANDING form of the faith — because he found something TRUER.
What would your accusers testify about you — if they were willing to tell the truth about your history?
