“And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,”
My Notes
What Does Acts 4:36 Mean?
Luke introduces Barnabas — originally named Joses — by his apostle-given nickname: "son of consolation" (or encouragement). The apostles renamed him because his character was so consistently encouraging that it became his identity. He was a Levite from Cyprus who sold property and donated the proceeds to the community (verse 37).
The name "Barnabas" (bar-nechemyah or bar-nabiy — son of encouragement/consolation/prophecy) tells you what the early church valued: encouragement was significant enough to earn a name change. In a community facing persecution, poverty, and internal challenges, the person who consistently encouraged others was recognized and honored for it.
Barnabas's introduction here sets up his crucial role later in Acts: he'll vouch for the converted Paul when everyone else is afraid of him (9:27), he'll be sent to Antioch when the church there is growing (11:22), and he'll partner with Paul on the first missionary journey (13:2). Every significant act Barnabas performs flows from his character as the encourager.
Reflection Questions
- 1.If the apostles renamed you based on your consistent character, what name would they give?
- 2.Why was encouragement valued enough to earn someone a new identity in the early church?
- 3.Who in your life needs the Barnabas ministry — someone to vouch for them when others are afraid?
- 4.How does Barnabas's arc (encourager at every critical moment) challenge the assumption that dramatic gifts matter most?
Devotional
They called him Barnabas — Son of Encouragement. Not because he asked for the title. Because the apostles watched how he lived and said: that's who you are. You're the encouragement guy. It's your name now.
In a community where people were selling homes and being arrested, where the pressure was constant and the future was uncertain, encouragement was so valuable that it earned a man a new name. The apostles didn't rename him "Son of Theology" or "Son of Strategy" or "Son of Leadership." Son of Encouragement. That's what the early church needed most, and that's what Barnabas consistently provided.
His introduction here is Luke's setup for Barnabas's entire arc in Acts. When Saul converts and everyone is terrified of him, Barnabas vouches for him — encouragement. When the church in Antioch starts growing among Gentiles and Jerusalem doesn't know what to make of it, they send Barnabas — encouragement. When the first missionary journey needs a team, Barnabas and Paul are sent together — the encourager and the theologian.
Every pivotal moment in the early church's expansion involves Barnabas, and every Barnabas moment involves encouragement. He doesn't preach the sermons Paul preaches. He doesn't perform the miracles Peter performs. He encourages. He sees potential others miss. He vouch for people others fear. He shows up where the church is most fragile and strengthens it by being present.
What if the most important ministry you could have isn't teaching or preaching or leading — but encouraging? Barnabas changed the trajectory of the entire church not through spectacular gifts but through the consistent practice of seeing the best in people and saying so.
