Amos 8:7

Amos 8:7
The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

My Notes

What Does Amos 8:7 Mean?

God swears an oath — by the "excellency of Jacob" (His own commitment to Israel) — that He will never forget any of their works. The context is verse 5-6: merchants who cheat the poor, who can't wait for the Sabbath to end so they can resume exploiting, who sell the needy for a pair of shoes.

When God says "I will never forget," it's not a memory statement. It's a justice guarantee. The works He won't forget are the economic crimes against the vulnerable. Every rigged scale, every exploitative transaction, every shoe-for-a-human trade is permanently recorded.

"Sworn by the excellency of Jacob" means God swears by Himself — by His own identity as Israel's God. This is the most unbreakable form of oath. God's reputation is the collateral. If He forgets, His own name is compromised. He's staking His identity on His commitment to justice.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Does knowing that God 'never forgets' economic injustice change how you conduct your financial dealings?
  • 2.Where do you see the pattern Amos describes — religious performance covering economic exploitation?
  • 3.What does God's oath (sworn by His own identity) tell you about how seriously He takes economic justice?
  • 4.Are you confident that your 'works' toward the vulnerable can stand up to a God who never forgets?

Devotional

"I will never forget any of their works." God doesn't forget. And what He's remembering here is how they treated the poor.

The merchants in Amos's audience were getting rich by cheating — falsifying scales, selling the waste of the wheat, buying the needy for a pair of sandals. And they did it while observing the Sabbath and the feasts. Religious on the outside. Predatory on the inside.

God swore He'd never forget. Not their worship. Not their religious performance. Their works — specifically, what they did to the vulnerable. Every transaction. Every rigged deal. Every poor person exploited for profit. Permanently filed in divine memory.

This should terrify anyone who profits from exploitation while performing piety. God isn't impressed by your religious calendar when your business practices destroy people. He isn't fooled by Sabbath observance that masks Monday exploitation. He sees both — the worship and the works. And He's sworn an oath that He'll never forget the works.

"Never forget" isn't a threat. It's a promise. God's justice has no expiration date. The wrongs done to the poor don't decay with time. They don't fade from the record. They're held in a memory backed by the oath of God Himself.

Be careful what you do to the powerless. God is keeping a record that doesn't delete.
