Daniel 6:10

Daniel 6:10
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime .

My Notes

What Does Daniel 6:10 Mean?

Daniel 6:10 is a masterclass in quiet defiance. "When Daniel knew that the writing was signed" — he wasn't caught off guard. He knew the decree was law: anyone who prayed to any god or man except King Darius for thirty days would be thrown into the lions' den. The trap was set specifically for him. And Daniel's response was to go home, open his windows toward Jerusalem, and pray exactly as he always had.

Every detail matters. "His windows being open" — he didn't hide. He could have prayed silently with the shutters closed and maintained plausible deniability. He chose visibility. "In his chamber toward Jerusalem" — the direction of prayer followed Solomon's dedication prayer in 1 Kings 8:48, orienting worship toward the temple even from exile. "Three times a day" — morning, noon, and evening, a practice attested elsewhere in Psalm 55:17. "And gave thanks before his God" — not just petitions. Thanksgiving. In the face of a death sentence, Daniel's first response was gratitude.

"As he did aforetime" — ka'di di hava 'aved. This is the phrase that defines Daniel's courage. He didn't ramp up his prayer life for dramatic effect. He didn't suddenly become bold in the face of persecution. He simply didn't stop what he'd always done. His faithfulness in the crisis was simply the continuation of his faithfulness before it. The lion's den didn't produce Daniel's devotion. It revealed it.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.If your faith practices were made illegal tomorrow, what would people notice you stopped doing?
  • 2.What daily spiritual habits are you building now that would sustain you in a crisis?
  • 3.Daniel prayed with open windows — he didn't hide his faith for self-preservation. Where are you tempted to close the shutters?
  • 4.What does it mean that Daniel 'gave thanks' in the face of a death sentence? How do you practice gratitude when circumstances are terrifying?

Devotional

Daniel knew the decree was signed. He knew what it meant. He knew the lions' den was waiting. And he went home, opened his windows, and prayed. The same way. The same time. The same direction. As he did aforetime.

That last phrase is everything. Daniel's courage in the crisis wasn't manufactured for the occasion. It was the overflow of habits he'd been building for decades. He didn't decide in that moment to become a man of prayer. He'd been praying three times a day, facing Jerusalem, with open windows, for years — probably since he was a teenager carried into Babylonian exile. The crisis didn't create his character. It simply made his character visible.

And notice what he didn't do. He didn't organize a protest. He didn't give a speech. He didn't rally supporters or negotiate with the king. He went home and prayed. With the windows open. Not as an act of defiance for its own sake, but because hiding what you've always done is its own kind of denial. Closing those windows would have been a statement too — just the wrong one.

Here's the question this verse leaves you with: if a law were passed tomorrow banning your spiritual practices, what would anyone notice was missing? Is there a rhythm in your life consistent enough and visible enough that its absence would be obvious? Daniel's faithfulness wasn't heroic because it happened once under pressure. It was heroic because it had happened every day for years before anyone was watching.
