- Deuteronomy

- Verse 3
“Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
My Notes
What Does Deuteronomy 13:3 Mean?
Moses warns that false prophets will arise who perform genuine signs and wonders — and they should be rejected anyway. The reason: God is testing Israel. The signs aren't proof of the prophet's authority; they're a test of Israel's loyalty. "The LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."
This is a striking passage because it means supernatural signs alone don't validate a message. A prophet can perform miracles and still be false. The test isn't power — it's alignment with God's revealed word. If the prophet says "let us go after other gods," the signs are irrelevant. The message contradicts what God has already said.
God allowing false prophets to perform signs reveals something about how He tests His people. He doesn't just test through suffering. He tests through seduction — through attractive, impressive, seemingly validated alternatives to faithfulness.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Have you ever been impressed by someone's spiritual 'power' only to later realize their message was off?
- 2.How do you evaluate spiritual experiences and leaders — by their impressiveness or by their alignment with Scripture?
- 3.What does it mean that God tests through seduction, not just through suffering?
- 4.Where in your life might you be following signs rather than truth?
Devotional
The miracle is real. The prophet is false. That possibility should keep every believer sharp.
Moses is saying something radical here: supernatural power is not proof of divine authority. A false prophet can perform genuine signs and wonders — and the correct response is still rejection. Because the test isn't "can they do impressive things?" The test is "do they lead you toward or away from the God you already know?"
God allows this as a test. Not to trick you, but to reveal what's actually in your heart. Are you following power, or are you following truth? Are you impressed by signs, or are you loyal to the God who already spoke? When something flashy and convincing says "let's go this direction" — but that direction contradicts what God has already revealed — what do you choose?
This is profoundly relevant in a world that follows influence, platform, and spectacle. The most impressive communicator, the most "anointed" performance, the most emotionally overwhelming experience — none of these are the final test. The test is always: does this align with what God has already said?
Don't follow the miracle. Follow the word.
