“Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
My Notes
What Does Ephesians 3:21 Mean?
This is the closing doxology of Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 — a burst of worship that caps off one of his most passionate passages. He's been praying that the Ephesians would comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height of Christ's love. And now he says: glory to God, in the church, through Christ, forever.
The phrase "in the church" is theologically loaded. God's glory is displayed through the church — this messy, imperfect, diverse community of believers is the vehicle through which God has chosen to showcase Himself to the world. Not through political power, not through military might, not through cultural influence — through the church.
"Throughout all ages, world without end" means this isn't temporary. The church isn't a phase in God's plan that He'll eventually move past. It's the permanent, eternal vehicle for His glory. Whatever frustrations you have with the church, God's commitment to it is forever.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does knowing that God chose the church as the vehicle for His glory change how you think about your local congregation?
- 2.Have you ever been tempted to give up on the church? What kept you (or didn't keep you)?
- 3.What does it mean practically that God's glory is displayed 'in the church' — what does that look like when it's working well?
- 4.How do you hold together honest frustration with the church and genuine commitment to it?
Devotional
God chose the church as the place where His glory would be displayed. Not angels. Not nature. Not government. The church.
If that seems like an odd choice, you're paying attention. The church is fractured, imperfect, full of people who can't agree on anything. And yet Paul — in a moment of ecstatic worship — says this is where God's glory lives. Throughout all ages. World without end.
This should do two things to you. First, it should elevate your view of what the church is. When you gather with other believers — even the ones who frustrate you, even in a building that's too hot and a service that's too long — you're participating in God's eternal plan for displaying His glory. That's not a small thing.
Second, it should humble you. If God chose the church, then your frustrations with it — valid as they may be — don't override His commitment. You can critique the church and work to improve it. But you can't abandon it and claim you're following the God who planted His glory there permanently.
