Ephesians 5:30

Ephesians 5:30
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

My Notes

What Does Ephesians 5:30 Mean?

Paul describes believers' union with Christ using the most physical possible language: "we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones." The union isn't metaphorical or spiritual alone — Paul uses the language of physical incorporation. Believers are as connected to Christ as limbs are to a body.

The echo of Genesis 2:23 is deliberate: Adam said of Eve, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh." Paul applies marital-union language to the Christ-church relationship. The intimacy between husband and wife that Adam first described now characterizes the relationship between Christ and his people.

The phrase "of his flesh, and of his bones" goes beyond the body metaphor Paul typically uses (1 Corinthians 12). It's not just that we function as different parts of one body. We share the actual substance of Christ's body — his flesh, his bones. The union is material, not just functional.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does 'flesh of his flesh, bone of his bone' go beyond typical descriptions of your relationship with Christ?
  • 2.What does the Genesis 2:23 echo (Adam/Eve language applied to Christ/church) teach about the intimacy God intends?
  • 3.Where has your understanding of union with Christ been too abstract — and how does this verse make it more physical?
  • 4.What changes in your daily life if you genuinely believe you are part of Christ's body, not just connected to it?

Devotional

We are his body. His flesh. His bones. Paul reaches for the most physical, most intimate, most literal language he can find to describe your union with Christ — and it's the language Adam used about Eve.

This isn't metaphor. Or if it is, it's the kind of metaphor that's trying to say something more literal than literal language can express. You aren't just like Christ's body. You are Christ's body. Your connection to Jesus isn't organizational (member of his club) or philosophical (follower of his ideas). It's organic. Flesh of his flesh. Bone of his bone.

The Genesis echo is the key. When Adam saw Eve, he said: this is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. The recognition was of shared substance — she came from him, is made of the same material, shares his nature. Paul says the same thing about Christ and the church: we share his substance. We came from his side (the cross — blood and water from the pierced side, John 19:34). We are made of his material.

The intimacy being described here exceeds what most theology allows us to feel. We're comfortable with Jesus as Lord (authority over us), as Savior (sacrifice for us), even as Friend (companion with us). But flesh of his flesh? Bone of his bone? The union Paul describes is so close, so physical, so shared-substance that it approaches the oneness Adam and Eve experienced — and it's meant to.

You are not separate from Christ with a connection to him. You are part of Christ — as genuinely as your hand is part of your arm, as actually as Eve was part of Adam. The union isn't something you achieve. It's something you are.
