“But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:”
My Notes
What Does Ephesians 6:21 Mean?
"But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things." Paul sends TYCHICUS to the Ephesians as his PERSONAL representative — carrying news about Paul's affairs and condition. Tychicus isn't just a letter-carrier. He's a BELOVED BROTHER (personal warmth) and FAITHFUL MINISTER (proven reliability) IN THE LORD (Christological identity). The three descriptors build: relationship (beloved), character (faithful), and context (in the Lord).
The phrase "that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do" (hina eidēte kai hymeis ta kat' eme, ti prassō — that you also might know the things concerning me, what I am doing) reveals Paul's DESIRE for the Ephesians to KNOW his situation: Paul isn't just sending a letter. He's sending PERSONAL NEWS. The apostle wants the church to know his CONDITION — not just his theology. The relationship includes personal transparency. The pastor shares his SITUATION, not just his doctrine.
The triple description — "beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord" (ho agapētos adelphos kai pistos diakonos en Kyriō — the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord) — gives Tychicus THREE credentials: BELOVED (agapētos — loved, cherished, dear — the personal bond), FAITHFUL (pistos — trustworthy, reliable, proven — the character quality), and IN THE LORD (en Kyriō — the Christological context that gives both love and faithfulness their meaning).
Reflection Questions
- 1.Who do you trust to carry your personal news — and do they have all three credentials?
- 2.What does Paul wanting the church to know his PERSONAL situation teach about pastoral transparency?
- 3.How does 'beloved, faithful, in the Lord' describe the complete credential for a trusted representative?
- 4.What letter-carrier in your life needs to be both LOVED and FAITHFUL?
Devotional
I'm sending Tychicus — so you'll know how I'm doing. He's a beloved brother. A faithful minister. In the Lord. Three credentials for the man who carries Paul's personal news: he's LOVED (relationship), he's FAITHFUL (character), and he's IN THE LORD (context). The letter-carrier is as important as the letter.
The 'that ye may know my affairs' reveals Paul's RELATIONAL transparency: Paul wants the Ephesians to know his PERSONAL situation — not just his theology but his CONDITION. How he's doing. What's happening. The apostle who writes the highest theology in the New Testament (Ephesians) also wants the church to know his PERSONAL circumstances. The theology and the transparency coexist. The doctrine comes with the human update.
The 'beloved brother' is the RELATIONAL credential: Tychicus isn't just a delivery-boy. He's BELOVED — agapētos, the word used for the deepest Christian affection. He's a BROTHER — adelphos, family, the intimate bond of shared faith. The person carrying your news must be someone you LOVE and who loves YOU. The news-carrier must be trusted with your HEART, not just your MAIL.
The 'faithful minister in the Lord' adds CHARACTER and CONTEXT: FAITHFUL (pistos) means PROVEN — tested, reliable, demonstrated over time. MINISTER (diakonos) means SERVANT — someone who serves, not someone who self-promotes. IN THE LORD means the faithfulness and service operate WITHIN Christ's authority and by Christ's empowerment. The character is real. The service is genuine. The context is Christological.
Who are you sending as YOUR Tychicus — and do they carry all three credentials?
