“And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail:”
My Notes
What Does Exodus 40:26 Mean?
"And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail." Moses places the GOLDEN ALTAR (the incense altar) inside the Tabernacle, BEFORE the veil. The Tabernacle is being ASSEMBLED — each piece of furniture placed in its divinely designated position. The golden altar goes where God specified (30:6): before the veil, facing the ark, at the threshold of the Most Holy Place. The placement completes the INTERIOR arrangement: the incense altar stands between the lampstand and the showbread table, facing the veil, ready for the daily incense.
The phrase "he put the golden altar" (vayyasem et mizbach hazzahav — he placed the altar of gold) describes DELIBERATE PLACEMENT: Moses doesn't just bring the altar inside. He PLACES it — sets it in its designated position, positions it according to the divine plan. The 'put' (sam — set, place, establish) is the action of INSTALLATION. The altar is INSTALLED — permanently positioned, officially placed, ready for use.
The "in the tent of the congregation before the vail" (be'ohel mo'ed liphnei happarokhet — in the tent of meeting before the curtain) confirms the EXACT location specified in 30:6: before the veil. The altar stands INSIDE the tent (not in the courtyard) and BEFORE the veil (not behind it). The position is INTERIOR (inside the Holy Place) and BOUNDARY (facing the Most Holy Place but not inside it). The incense rises from THIS position — inside the tent, before the veil, toward the presence behind the curtain.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What interior, threshold-positioned prayer are you placing where God designated?
- 2.What does the altar being INSIDE (not in the courtyard) teach about private, inner-room worship?
- 3.How does the placement being EXACT (where God specified) model obedient positioning?
- 4.What does the incense altar facing the VEIL (as close to God's presence as possible) describe about prayer's aim?
Devotional
He placed the golden altar inside the tent — before the veil. The incense altar is INSTALLED at the threshold of the divine presence: inside the Holy Place, facing the Most Holy Place, positioned to send incense-smoke toward the mercy seat. The placement is EXACT. The position is PRESCRIBED. The altar stands where God said it should stand.
The 'he put' (vayyasem — he placed/set) is the INSTALLATION moment: the Tabernacle has been erected. The furniture is being positioned. Each piece goes where God DESIGNATED. The golden altar is PLACED — not randomly but according to the divine floor-plan. The installation is the obedience. The placement is the faithfulness. The altar stands where the plan says it stands.
The 'in the tent of the congregation' makes the altar INTERIOR furniture: the golden incense altar belongs INSIDE — not in the courtyard (where the bronze altar stands) but inside the covered tent. The incense is INTERIOR worship — the private, enclosed, inner-room prayer that rises toward God without the public seeing. The courtyard altar is visible to everyone. The golden altar is visible only to the priests inside the tent.
The 'before the vail' makes the altar THRESHOLD-positioned: facing the curtain, facing the Most Holy Place, aimed at the presence behind the partition. The incense that burns on THIS altar sends smoke toward the MERCY SEAT — across the veil, into the space where God dwells. The prayers that rise from this altar travel the short distance from the altar to the mercy seat. The threshold-position means the prayers are as CLOSE to God's presence as physically possible.
What 'golden altar' — what interior, threshold-positioned prayer — are you placing where God designated?
