Ezekiel 16:53

Ezekiel 16:53
When I shall bring again their captivity , the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them:

My Notes

What Does Ezekiel 16:53 Mean?

"When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them." God promises to restore THREE groups simultaneously: Sodom, Samaria, AND Jerusalem. The sequence is shocking — Jerusalem's restoration is listed ALONGSIDE and AFTER the two cities she considered most wicked. The company humbles. The sequence stings. Jerusalem is restored in the midst of — not above — the cities she despised.

The inclusion of SODOM — the city destroyed by fire from heaven, the byword for ultimate wickedness — is the most provocative element: God will restore SODOM'S captivity? Sodom was supposed to be the permanently destroyed, irredeemable city. But God puts Sodom's restoration in the SAME sentence as Jerusalem's. The city Jerusalem used as a measuring stick for wickedness is restored alongside Jerusalem.

The phrase "in the midst of them" (betokhanam — among them, in their midst) positions Jerusalem's restoration INSIDE the restoration of Sodom and Samaria: not above them. Not after them in a position of honor. IN THE MIDST — surrounded by the very cities Jerusalem despised. The restoration humbles as much as it heals.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What person or situation you considered beyond redemption might God be restoring?
  • 2.What does Jerusalem being restored 'in the midst of' Sodom and Samaria teach about the humbling nature of grace?
  • 3.How does God restoring Sodom (the city destroyed by heavenly fire) redefine what's beyond redemption?
  • 4.What hierarchy of sin are you maintaining that God's equal-restoration demolishes?

Devotional

God restores Sodom. God restores Samaria. And God restores Jerusalem — in the MIDST of them. Not above. Not separately. In the middle. Surrounded by the cities Jerusalem considered beneath her. The restoration is real. The humbling is equally real.

The inclusion of SODOM demolishes every hierarchy of sin: Jerusalem used Sodom as the ultimate standard of wickedness — 'at least we're not as bad as Sodom.' And God says: I'm restoring Sodom alongside you. The city you looked down on gets the same grace you get. The measuring stick you used to feel superior is now standing beside you in the restoration line. You're not better than Sodom. You're restored WITH Sodom.

The 'in the midst of them' is the positioning that humbles: Jerusalem expected to be restored ABOVE Sodom and Samaria — in a position of superiority, a place of honor. Instead, she's restored IN THE MIDST — among them, surrounded by them, at the same level. The restoration doesn't elevate Jerusalem above her 'sisters.' It places her at their table. The humbling is built into the healing.

The theological implication is staggering: if God restores SODOM — the city destroyed by fire for its wickedness — then no person, no city, no community is beyond restoration. The most destroyed, most judged, most bypassed place on earth is included in God's restoration plan. If Sodom can be restored, anything can be restored. If fire-from-heaven Sodom gets a second chance, nobody is excluded.

What 'Sodom' in your life — what person or situation you considered beyond redemption — might God be restoring alongside you?
