“As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;”
My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 34:8 Mean?
"As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock." God swears by his own life — the strongest possible oath — and indicts Israel's shepherds (leaders) with the most devastating charge: the flock became prey because the shepherds fed themselves instead of feeding the sheep. The sheep were eaten by predators because the people assigned to protect them were too busy consuming the benefits of their position.
The accusation is compound: no shepherd searched for the lost. No shepherd protected from predators. The shepherds fed themselves. Every dimension of leadership failed simultaneously. And the sheep paid the price.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where have you seen leaders 'feed themselves' while the people they lead go hungry?
- 2.What does God swearing by his own life about this crime tell you about how seriously he takes leadership failure?
- 3.What 'searching for the lost' has been neglected in your community because the leaders were too comfortable?
- 4.If God inspected the flock you're responsible for, what would he find?
Devotional
My flock became prey. Because the shepherds fed themselves. God swears by his own life to make this accusation — the most solemn oath possible — because the crime is the most severe possible: leaders who consumed the flock they were supposed to protect.
The shepherds fed themselves. That's the core accusation. The food, resources, attention, and energy that should have gone to the sheep went to the shepherds instead. The leaders ate while the led starved. The protectors consumed while the protected were consumed. The system that was designed to nourish the flock became a system for nourishing the leadership.
Neither did my shepherds search for my flock. The lost sheep were never looked for. The wandering members were never pursued. The missing were written off as acceptable losses while the shepherds maintained their comfortable positions. The searching — the active, exhausting, sometimes dangerous work of finding lost sheep — never happened. Because searching costs energy the shepherds were spending on themselves.
My flock became meat to every beast of the field. The predators didn't have to work hard. The sheep were unprotected, unfed, unsearched-for. Easy prey. The wolves didn't defeat the shepherds in a battle. They simply walked past shepherds who weren't watching because they were eating.
This is the indictment of every spiritual leader who has prioritized personal comfort over the welfare of the people entrusted to them. Every pastor who built a platform while the congregation suffered. Every leader who consumed resources meant for the community. Every shepherd who fed themselves while the flock was devoured by the beasts they were supposed to guard against.
As I live. God swears to it. The crime is so serious that God stakes his own existence on the response. The shepherds who fed themselves are about to discover what happens when the Owner of the flock shows up to inspect it.
