Ezra 4:7

Ezra 4:7
And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

My Notes

What Does Ezra 4:7 Mean?

"And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue." The OPPOSITION to rebuilding: enemies of the returned exiles write an official COMPLAINT to the Persian emperor. The letter is written in ARAMAIC (Syrian tongue) — the lingua franca of the Persian Empire — ensuring it reaches the king in the language of imperial bureaucracy. The opposition uses ADMINISTRATIVE channels to block the divine project.

The phrase "and the rest of their companions" (ushear kenavateho — and the rest of their associates/colleagues) shows ORGANIZED opposition: this isn't one disgruntled person. It's a COALITION — Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and their associates. The opposition to God's work is ORGANIZED, collective, and strategic. The enemies don't just grumble. They write official letters in the proper language through the proper channels.

The ARAMAIC specification is important: the letter is written in the language of POWER. The enemies understand that imperial bureaucracy operates in Aramaic. They use the language of the system to weaponize the system against the rebuilding. The opposition is SOPHISTICATED — literate, politically savvy, and fluent in the language that gets imperial attention.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What bureaucratic opposition is using the system to block what God is building?
  • 2.What does the enemies writing in ARAMAIC (the language of power) teach about sophisticated resistance to divine work?
  • 3.How does the opposition forming a COALITION describe the organized nature of resistance?
  • 4.What prophetic voice will override the administrative order that temporarily stopped your work?

Devotional

The enemies write a LETTER. In the right LANGUAGE. To the right KING. Through the right CHANNELS. The opposition to rebuilding the temple isn't thugs with weapons. It's bureaucrats with pens. The resistance is ADMINISTRATIVE — formal complaints, official correspondence, imperial appeals. The opposition uses the SYSTEM to block God's work.

The ARAMAIC detail is the sophistication marker: the enemies know how the empire works. They write in the imperial language. They address the emperor through proper protocol. They include the right names, the right co-signers, the right bureaucratic forms. The opposition is LITERATE and STRATEGIC. The enemies of God's work are often the people who understand the system best.

The 'rest of their companions' reveals COALITION: this isn't a solo complaint. It's a coordinated effort — multiple named individuals plus unnamed associates. The opposition builds ALLIANCES. The resistance forms NETWORKS. The bureaucratic attack comes from a group, not an individual. The coalition multiplies the credibility of the complaint.

The letter will SUCCEED temporarily: Artaxerxes will order the work stopped (verse 21-23). The administrative opposition will HALT the temple-building. The bureaucratic weapon will work — for a time. The letter in the right language to the right king through the right channels will achieve its goal. Until God sends prophets (Haggai and Zechariah — Ezra 5:1) who speak a different language to a different King.

What sophisticated, bureaucratic opposition is using the SYSTEM to block what God is building — and what prophetic voice will override the administrative order?
