“To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.”
My Notes
What Does Galatians 2:5 Mean?
"To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you." When false brothers (v. 4) infiltrated the Jerusalem meeting to spy out the Gentile believers' freedom and bring them into bondage (circumcision), Paul refused to yield. "Not for an hour" — not even temporarily, not even as a diplomatic concession, not even to keep the peace. The truth of the gospel was more important than any political compromise. The non-negotiable: Gentile freedom from the law. The duration of the compromise: zero.
The purpose: "that the truth of the gospel might continue with you" — the Galatian Gentile believers. Paul held the line in Jerusalem so that the Galatians wouldn't be brought under a yoke they were never meant to carry.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What truth of the gospel are you currently being pressured to compromise — even for 'an hour'?
- 2.How do you identify which issues are non-negotiable hills versus areas for legitimate flexibility?
- 3.What temporary concession would establish a permanent precedent you can't undo?
- 4.Who are the 'Galatians' in your life — the people whose freedom depends on you holding the line?
Devotional
Not for an hour. Paul wouldn't budge. Not a concession. Not a compromise. Not a temporary accommodation. Not for one hour. Because the truth of the gospel was at stake — and truth doesn't do temporary compromises.
False brothers had infiltrated the Jerusalem meeting (v. 4) — people who pretended to be believers but whose agenda was bondage: bring the Gentiles under circumcision, under the law, under the yoke the Jerusalem Council would later reject (Acts 15:10). They wanted the free Gentiles enslaved. And they had enough political presence to make the pressure real.
We gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour. Paul names what he refused to do: give place (hypeixamen — yield, submit, make room). He wouldn't make room for the enslaving theology. Not even temporarily. Not even as a diplomatic gesture. Not even to smooth the conversation and deal with it later. No, not for an hour.
The 'not for an hour' is the precision of principle: compromise on the non-negotiable isn't measured in degrees. It's measured in time. Even one hour of concession — one moment of acting as if Gentile freedom was negotiable — would have established a precedent. And precedents outlive the hours that created them.
That the truth of the gospel might continue with you. The purpose was the Galatians. Paul held the line in Jerusalem for the sake of Gentile churches he'd already planted. If he yielded in Jerusalem — even briefly — the Galatians would hear: even Paul submitted to circumcision. And their freedom would evaporate. The one-hour concession in Jerusalem would have produced permanent bondage in Galatia.
The principle: the truth of the gospel requires non-negotiable stands at specific moments. Not everything is a hill to die on. But some things are — and the moment the false brothers pushed for circumcision, Paul recognized the hill. And planted his feet. For not one hour.
The people who compromised for the sake of peace would have produced permanent bondage for the sake of a comfortable meeting. Paul endured the uncomfortable meeting to preserve permanent freedom.
