“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
My Notes
What Does Genesis 1:29 Mean?
In the first chapter of Genesis, God provides humanity's original diet: "every herb bearing seed" and "every tree... the fruit of a tree yielding seed." The original human diet was plant-based—seeds, fruits, herbs. No animal is mentioned as food for humans until after the flood (Genesis 9:3). The first provision was vegetarian, given in a world where death hadn't yet entered through sin.
The phrase "I have given you" establishes God as the provider: food isn't something humans discovered or invented. It's a gift. The earth's capacity to produce food—the seeds, the herbs, the fruit-bearing trees—was designed by God and given to humanity as provision. The abundance of creation exists because a generous God filled the earth with more food than humanity could consume.
The detail "which is upon the face of all the earth" universalizes the provision: the food isn't limited to one garden or one region. It covers the entire earth. God's food provision for humanity is as comprehensive as the planet's surface. Wherever humans go, food has been provided. The provision preceded the need. God planted before He created the ones who would eat.
Reflection Questions
- 1.If God's first act toward humanity was providing food, what does that say about His priorities?
- 2.The provision preceded the need—food existed before hunger did. Where has God provided for you before you even knew you needed it?
- 3.The original diet required no death. What does a death-free provision reveal about God's original design?
- 4.If the earth is covered with God's provision, what anxiety about 'enough' can you release today?
Devotional
"I have given you every herb bearing seed... and every tree." God's first gift to humanity after creating them was food. Not instructions. Not laws. Not prohibitions (those came later). Food. The very first thing God does for the humans He just made is make sure they can eat. The provision is the priority.
The original diet was seeds and fruit—the earth's abundance in its most generous form. No death required. No animal killed. The first world God designed was a world where humans ate what grew from the ground, and every tree on the planet offered its fruit freely. The provision was comprehensive: every herb, every tree, upon the face of all the earth. More food than humanity could ever consume.
The phrase "I have given" is the key: the food is a gift. You didn't earn it. You didn't cultivate it (not yet—that comes in chapter 2). You didn't even know you needed it until it was already there. God provided before you were hungry. He planted before you existed. The meal was on the table before the guest arrived.
This is the pattern of God's provision throughout Scripture: He gives before you ask. He plants before you need. He fills the earth with seed-bearing herbs and fruit-bearing trees before the first human takes the first bite. If you're anxious about provision—if you're worried about whether there will be enough—the first chapter of the Bible answers: God has already given. The earth is covered with His provision. Your job isn't to generate the food. It's to receive the gift.
