My Notes
What Does Genesis 18:6 Mean?
"And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth." Abraham receives three mysterious visitors (verse 2) — and his IMMEDIATE response is EXTRAVAGANT HOSPITALITY. He HASTENS (runs to the tent), tells Sarah to work QUICKLY, and specifies THREE MEASURES of FINE meal (approximately 22 liters — an ENORMOUS amount for three guests). The hospitality is URGENT (hastened, quickly), ABUNDANT (three measures — far more than needed), and INVOLVED (he mobilizes Sarah, the servants, and himself).
The phrase "Abraham hastened" (vayemaher Avraham — Abraham hurried) describes URGENCY in hospitality: Abraham doesn't stroll. He HURRIES. The urgency communicates HONOR — the guests are important enough to run for. The hastening is the hospitality's FIRST expression. Before the food is prepared, the SPEED of the preparation communicates the value of the guests.
The "three measures of fine meal" (shelosh se'im qemach solet — three seahs of fine flour) is EXTRAVAGANTLY generous: three seahs is approximately 22 liters (about half a bushel) of the FINEST flour — enough bread for a BANQUET, not for three guests at a roadside stop. The amount is ABSURDLY generous. Abraham doesn't calculate the minimum. He prepares the MAXIMUM. The excess IS the hospitality. The abundance IS the honor.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What extravagant hospitality are you offering to unknown visitors?
- 2.What does Abraham RUNNING teach about hospitality's speed communicating the guests' value?
- 3.How does three measures (enough for a banquet) for three people describe the abundance of genuine welcome?
- 4.What does offering hospitality BEFORE knowing the guests' identity teach about unconditional welcome?
Devotional
Abraham HURRIED. Told Sarah: QUICKLY — three measures of fine meal, knead it, make cakes. The hospitality is URGENT (he ran), EXTRAVAGANT (three measures — enough for a banquet), and MOBILIZING (he involves Sarah, servants, and himself). The three visitors receive hospitality fit for ROYALTY — because they ARE divine.
The 'hastened' is the SPEED of honor: Abraham runs. The running says: you are important enough to RUN for. The urgency communicates VALUE. The hastening communicates WORTH. The guests haven't asked for food. Abraham OFFERS — immediately, urgently, with the speed that says: serving you is my PRIORITY. The hospitality begins with the FEET, not the kitchen.
The 'quickly three measures of fine meal' is ABSURD generosity: three seahs of fine flour produces enough bread for DOZENS of people — not three visitors at a tent-stop. Abraham doesn't calculate the MINIMUM. He prepares the MAXIMUM. The excess isn't waste. It's HONOR. The abundance communicates: you deserve MORE than you need. The over-preparation IS the hospitality.
The mobilization — Sarah kneads, Abraham runs to the herd (verse 7), a servant prepares the calf — means EVERYONE participates: the hospitality isn't one person's job. The entire household is INVOLVED in serving the three visitors. The patriarch commands. The matriarch bakes. The servant cooks. The community serves TOGETHER. The hospitality is TEAM-EFFORT.
Hebrews 13:2 reflects on this scene: 'be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.' Abraham's extravagant, urgent, abundant hospitality was offered to DIVINE visitors he didn't initially recognize. The hospitality was given BEFORE the identity was known.
What extravagant hospitality are you offering to visitors whose identity you don't yet know?
