My Notes
What Does Genesis 19:15 Mean?
"And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city." The ANGELS URGE Lot to HURRY: morning has come, the judgment is imminent, and Lot must LEAVE NOW. The urgency is in the HASTENING — the angels press, push, rush Lot to get his family out. The warning is specific: take your WIFE and your TWO DAUGHTERS — the ones 'which are here' (the sons-in-law refused to come, verse 14). Leave NOW or be CONSUMED in the city's punishment.
The phrase "the angels hastened Lot" (vayyaitzu hammal'akhim beLot — the angels urged/pressed Lot) means the angels had to PUSH: Lot didn't leave willingly. He had to be URGED — pressed, hastened, pushed toward the exit. The reluctance to leave is the ATTACHMENT to the city. Even with judgment imminent, Lot doesn't move quickly enough. The angels must HASTEN him — add urgency that Lot's own assessment doesn't produce.
The "lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city" (pen tissapheh ba'avon ha'ir — lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city) warns of COLLATERAL CONSUMPTION: the judgment coming on the city will CONSUME everything in it — including righteous Lot if he stays. The iniquity's consequence is like fire — it doesn't discriminate between the guilty and the present-but-not-guilty. Staying in the condemned city means sharing the condemned city's fate.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What are the angels urging you to leave — and what attachment is slowing you down?
- 2.What does Lot needing to be PUSHED teach about attachment to places God has condemned?
- 3.What does 'which are here' (the reduced family) teach about rescue being limited to the willing?
- 4.What city's judgment might CONSUME you if you stay — and is the staying worth the risk?
Devotional
Morning comes. The angels PUSH Lot: GET UP. Take your wife. Take your daughters. Leave NOW — before the city's judgment consumes YOU too. The urgency is in the pushing: Lot had to be HASTENED. Even with destruction imminent, he didn't move fast enough. The angels had to ADD the urgency Lot's own heart didn't produce.
The 'angels hastened Lot' reveals RELUCTANCE to leave: Lot doesn't rush out on his own. He has to be PUSHED — urged, pressed, hastened by angelic intervention. The attachment to Sodom is SO DEEP that even facing imminent destruction, Lot LINGERS. The city he chose (13:11) has become the city he can't release. The comfort has produced the reluctance. The familiarity has created the attachment. The angels have to overcome what Lot's own judgment should have produced: the urgency to flee.
The 'thy wife and thy two daughters which are here' is the REDUCED family: the full family would include the sons-in-law (verse 14 — Lot warned them and they 'seemed as one that mocked'). They refused. The rescue is limited to those who are PRESENT and WILLING. The 'which are here' (hannimtza'ot — those who are found, those present) limits the rescue to the available. The offer extended to more. The acceptance came from fewer.
The 'lest thou be consumed in the iniquity' makes STAYING the danger: the judgment is coming to the CITY. If you're IN the city, you're IN the judgment. The iniquity of the city produces consequences that CONSUME everything within the city's boundaries. The righteous person IN the wrong place faces the wrong place's consequences. Location determines exposure. Staying is the risk.
What are the angels hastening YOU to leave — and what attachment is producing your reluctance?
