Genesis 43:34

Genesis 43:34
And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

My Notes

What Does Genesis 43:34 Mean?

"And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him." Joseph hosts his brothers at a FEAST — and sends portions (messes — manot, servings of food) from his own table. But BENJAMIN'S portion is FIVE TIMES larger than anyone else's. The favoritism mirrors Jacob's favoritism for Joseph — the youngest son of Rachel receives the LARGEST portion. The brothers NOTICE (they must) but their response is: they DRANK and were MERRY. The test embedded in the excessive portion produces no jealousy. The old pattern isn't repeated.

The phrase "Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs" (vatteirev mas'at Binyamin mimmas'ot kullam chamesh yadot — Benjamin's portion exceeded the portions of all of them five-handedly/five-fold) is a DELIBERATE TEST: Joseph gives the YOUNGEST son of RACHEL five times more than the others — EXACTLY the kind of favoritism that triggered the brothers' jealousy toward Joseph years earlier. The question Joseph is asking through the portions: will you respond to Benjamin's favoritism the way you responded to MINE? Will the jealousy resurface? Will the rage return?

The "they drank, and were merry with him" (vayyishtu vayyishkeru immo — they drank and became drunk/merry with him) is the ANSWER to the test: the brothers celebrate. They DON'T react with jealousy. They DON'T conspire against Benjamin. They DRINK and are MERRY — with Joseph, at his table, in the presence of the excessive portion. The test reveals: the brothers have CHANGED. The jealousy that sold Joseph isn't repeated with Benjamin.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What test is God running — recreating old triggers to see if you've changed?
  • 2.What does the SAME trigger producing a DIFFERENT response teach about genuine transformation?
  • 3.How does testing through BEHAVIOR (not interrogation) reveal deeper truth about character?
  • 4.What 'five-fold portion' — what excessive favoritism toward someone else — are you celebrating or resenting?

Devotional

Benjamin gets FIVE TIMES more food than everyone else. And the brothers? They drank and were MERRY. No jealousy. No conspiracy. No rage. The test is PASSED: the favoritism that destroyed the family twenty years ago doesn't destroy it now. The brothers have CHANGED. The old pattern is not repeated.

The 'Benjamin's mess was five times so much' is the DELIBERATE PROVOCATION: Joseph recreates the EXACT CONDITIONS that produced the original sin — excessive favoritism toward the youngest son of Rachel. The question embedded in the portions: has ANYTHING changed? Will you do to BENJAMIN what you did to ME? The five-fold portion is the five-fold test. The excess IS the examination.

The 'they drank and were merry' is the EVIDENCE of transformation: twenty years earlier, excessive favoritism (the coat of many colors) produced HATRED (37:4), conspiracy (37:18), and selling into slavery (37:28). NOW — excessive favoritism (five-fold portion) produces CELEBRATION. Same trigger. Different response. The brothers who couldn't tolerate Joseph's special treatment can now celebrate BENJAMIN'S special treatment. The change is GENUINE.

The test-by-favoritism is BRILLIANT: Joseph doesn't ASK the brothers if they've changed (people can LIE about that). He CREATES THE CONDITIONS that would trigger the old behavior and watches whether the old behavior appears. The test is BEHAVIORAL, not verbal. The evidence is in the RESPONSE, not in the claim. The merry drinking IS the passed test. The absence of jealousy IS the evidence of transformation.

What test has God placed in YOUR life — recreating old triggers to see if the old response has changed?
