Hebrews 1:2

Hebrews 1:2
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

My Notes

What Does Hebrews 1:2 Mean?

The writer of Hebrews introduces God's final revelation: in these last days, he has spoken by his Son. The previous communications — through prophets, at various times, in various ways — have been superseded. The Son is the final word.

"Whom he hath appointed heir of all things" — the Son inherits everything. All things — the entire created order, every dimension of reality. The heir owns what the creator made.

"By whom also he made the worlds" — the heir is also the creator. The Son through whom God speaks is the same Son through whom God created. The word that now reveals is the word that originally made.

The verse establishes Christ's supremacy through two roles: heir (he inherits everything) and creator (he made everything). The one speaking to you in these last days is the one who made the universe and will own it all. That is the weight of his words.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does God speaking through his Son differ from speaking through prophets?
  • 2.What does the Son being both heir and creator mean for the authority of his words?
  • 3.How should knowing the creator and heir of the universe is speaking change how you listen?
  • 4.What is God saying to you 'in these last days' through his Son?

Devotional

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. God has spoken. Not is silent. Not has withdrawn. Spoken — in these last days, through his Son. The revelation is current and final.

The prophets spoke before — at sundry times and in divers manners (v.1). Fragments of truth through various messengers over centuries. But now: the Son. Not a prophet. Not an angel. The Son. The final, complete, authoritative word.

Whom he hath appointed heir of all things. The Son inherits everything. All things — every galaxy, every kingdom, every atom. The one speaking to you owns the universe.

By whom also he made the worlds. And he made it. The heir is the creator. The one who inherits all things is the one who built all things. The word that speaks to you now is the same word that spoke everything into existence.

That is the weight of what you are hearing. When God speaks through his Son, the creator and heir of the universe is the one talking. His words are not suggestions. They are the voice that made everything and will own everything.

Are you listening? The one speaking is the one who made the worlds. And he is speaking to you.
