- Chapter 10
- Verse 27
“But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 10:27 Mean?
The author describes what awaits those who deliberately continue in sin after receiving knowledge of the truth (verse 26): a fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation that will devour the adversaries. The looking-for (ekdochē) isn't just anticipation. It's certainty. The judgment is coming and the person knows it.
The phrase "fiery indignation" (pyros zēlos — fire of jealousy) connects to God's jealous nature. The fire isn't random punishment. It's the jealous response of a God whose covenant has been violated. The same jealousy that protects produces the fire that judges. Love scorned becomes fire.
"Which shall devour the adversaries" — the fire consumes. The word "devour" (esthiō) means to eat. The fire eats the adversaries. The adversaries aren't external enemies of God. In this context, they're former insiders who have become willful sinners. The fire eats those who once belonged.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does this verse describe a hypothetical or someone you recognize — possibly yourself?
- 2.How do you distinguish between struggling with sin (which produces grief) and willfully continuing in it (which produces judgment)?
- 3.What does 'fiery indignation' as God's jealous response reveal about the nature of the fire?
- 4.Does this passage terrify you or motivate you — and which response does the author intend?
Devotional
A fearful expectation of judgment. You know it's coming. And you know why.
The author describes the worst spiritual position imaginable: someone who knew the truth, received the truth, and then deliberately chose to keep sinning anyway. For that person, there's no more sacrifice (verse 26). What's left? A certain fearful looking for of judgment. The certainty of the fire.
This isn't the fear of the ignorant — someone who doesn't know what's coming. This is the fear of the informed. Someone who understood the gospel, tasted its benefits, and walked away. The knowledge that was supposed to save them now haunts them. They know what they rejected. And they know what's waiting.
"Fiery indignation" — literally, the fire of jealousy. This is God's jealous love expressed as consuming fire. The same passion that pursues you for salvation becomes the fire that judges you for betrayal. God's jealousy doesn't disappear when you reject Him. It transforms — from the jealousy of a lover pursuing you to the jealousy of a lover scorned.
The adversaries being devoured aren't strangers. They're insiders who became outsiders by choice. The fire doesn't go looking for pagans. It finds the ones who knew better.
This verse exists not to terrify the struggling but to warn the willful. If you're struggling with sin and grieving over it — this isn't about you. If you're knowingly, deliberately, continuously sinning without remorse after knowing the truth — this is your mirror.
The fearful expectation isn't for the repentant. It's for the defiant.
