“Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 3:2 Mean?
Hebrews 3:2 establishes Jesus' credentials by comparing Him to the highest possible human standard — and then exceeding it: "Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house." Jesus was faithful. Like Moses. But the comparison that begins here will end with Jesus being shown as infinitely greater.
The word "faithful" — pistos — means trustworthy, reliable, dependable in fulfilling the role assigned. And "appointed" — poiēsanti, literally "made" or "constituted" — means God established Jesus in His role the way a king appoints an officer. The faithfulness isn't self-generated ambition. It's fidelity to an assignment received from above. Jesus didn't choose His own mission. He was faithful to the One who gave it to Him.
The comparison to Moses is the highest compliment the writer could give — and it's only the setup. Moses was faithful "in all his house" — a quotation from Numbers 12:7, where God defends Moses against Aaron and Miriam's challenge. In that passage, God says Moses is unique among prophets — faithful in God's entire household. Moses was the gold standard of faithful service. And the writer says: Jesus matches that standard. And then verse 3 immediately surpasses it: "For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house." Moses was faithful in the house. Jesus built the house. The servant was faithful inside the structure. The Son created the structure. The comparison honors Moses. The conclusion transcends him.
Reflection Questions
- 1.If faithfulness is Jesus' first credential, what does that reveal about what God values most in your own life?
- 2.How does the comparison (Jesus faithful like Moses, then greater than Moses) model the relationship between honoring human examples and recognizing Christ's supremacy?
- 3.Where has God given you an assignment that requires faithfulness more than brilliance — and are you fulfilling it?
- 4.Does hearing 'faithful' as Christ's first descriptor change what you pursue in your own spiritual development?
Devotional
Faithful. That's the word the writer of Hebrews uses for Jesus before any other descriptor. Not powerful. Not divine. Not miracle-working. Faithful. Trustworthy in the assignment He received from the Father. Reliable in executing what He was given to do. Before the writer talks about Jesus' superiority, he talks about His fidelity. Because superiority without faithfulness is just raw power. Faithfulness is what makes power trustworthy.
The Moses comparison is deliberate and generous. Moses was the most faithful human servant in Israel's history. God Himself certified it: "my servant Moses is faithful in all mine house" (Numbers 12:7). That's the resume Jesus is placed beside. And the writer says: Jesus matches it. And then exceeds it — because Moses was faithful inside the house. Jesus built the house. The servant and the architect aren't equals. The architect includes the servant's faithfulness and adds something the servant can never claim: ownership.
If faithfulness is Jesus' first credential — if the Son of God's primary qualification is that He did what the Father told Him to do — what does that say about your own calling? Before God asks about your gifts, your platform, or your impact, He asks about your faithfulness. Were you reliable with the assignment you received? Did you do what you were given to do? Moses' highest honor wasn't leading the exodus. It was being declared faithful in all God's house. Your highest honor won't be your greatest achievement. It'll be the same word: faithful.
