Hebrews 7:26

Hebrews 7:26
For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

My Notes

What Does Hebrews 7:26 Mean?

The writer of Hebrews describes the high priest believers need — and the description is a portrait of Jesus. Holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.

"Such an high priest became us" means this is the priest who is fitting, appropriate, perfectly suited to our need. We did not just get a priest. We got the priest — the one ideally matched to our condition.

Five qualities define him: holy (set apart for God), harmless (innocent, without malice), undefiled (pure, untainted), separate from sinners (distinct in nature), and made higher than the heavens (exalted above everything). Each quality addresses a different aspect of what a perfect mediator requires.

Unlike the Levitical priests who offered sacrifices daily — first for their own sins, then for the people's — Jesus offered himself once. The sacrifice was sufficient. The priest was perfect. The offering never needs repeating.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Which quality of Jesus as high priest — holy, harmless, undefiled, separate, exalted — do you most need to rely on?
  • 2.How does having a perfect high priest change your confidence in approaching God?
  • 3.What does 'separate from sinners' mean for someone who spent his ministry among them?
  • 4.How does Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice differ from the repeated offerings of Old Testament priests?

Devotional

Such an high priest became us. This is the priest you needed — and the one you got. Not a compromised mediator. Not a fellow sinner doing his best. A holy, harmless, undefiled priest who stands higher than the heavens.

Holy. Set apart completely for God's purposes. Harmless. Without malice, without hidden agenda, without self-interest. Undefiled. Pure — not just outwardly clean but inwardly spotless.

Separate from sinners. Not in the sense of avoiding them — Jesus ate with sinners constantly. Separate in nature. He lived among sinners without becoming one. He touched the unclean without being contaminated.

Made higher than the heavens. The priest who intercedes for you is not earthbound. He is exalted above everything. When he speaks on your behalf, he speaks from the highest position in existence.

You have a high priest. Not a distant bureaucrat processing your requests. A perfect, holy, undefiled mediator who knows your weakness because he lived in a body like yours, and who represents you from the highest place in the universe.

That is who is speaking to God on your behalf right now.
