“Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 8:5 Mean?
Hebrews 8:5 reveals that the entire Old Testament tabernacle system was a copy of a heavenly reality: "Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount."
The Levitical priests served in a structure that was an "example and shadow" — hypodeigma and skia — of heavenly things. Not the substance. Not the reality. A shadow. An approximation. God showed Moses a pattern on Mount Sinai, and Moses was told to replicate it exactly. Every detail of the tabernacle — the dimensions, the materials, the arrangement, the furniture — corresponded to something real in heaven. The earthly tabernacle was a scale model of the original.
The quotation from Exodus 25:40 — "make all things according to the pattern" — emphasizes two things. First, the earthly structure was derivative. It pointed somewhere. It represented something beyond itself. Second, the precision mattered. God didn't say "make something roughly similar." He said follow the exact pattern. Every measurement, every piece of furniture, every curtain had significance because each one corresponded to a heavenly reality. The writer's argument is that if the shadow required such precision, how much greater is the reality it pointed to? And Christ ministers in that reality — not in a tent in the desert, but in the actual presence of God.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Are there spiritual practices in your life that have become empty routine — shadows disconnected from the substance they point to?
- 2.How does knowing that earthly worship patterns reflect heavenly realities change how you approach worship?
- 3.What does it mean practically that Christ ministers in the heavenly reality, not in a copy or shadow?
- 4.How do you stay connected to the substance of your faith rather than going through the motions of its forms?
Devotional
Every detail of the tabernacle was a shadow of something real. The golden lampstand, the altar of incense, the mercy seat, the veil — none of them were the thing itself. They were carefully constructed echoes of a heavenly reality that Moses glimpsed on the mountain and was told to replicate exactly.
That reframes everything about the Old Testament. The rituals weren't arbitrary. The specifications weren't obsessive-compulsive religiosity. Every detail was a pixel in a larger image — a picture of the heavenly reality where Christ now serves on your behalf. The tabernacle was God's way of saying: I want to show you what's real, but you can't see it directly yet. So here's a model. A shadow. Follow the pattern, and one day the substance will arrive.
The substance has arrived. Christ doesn't minister in a tent. He ministers in heaven itself. He doesn't offer animal blood. He offered His own. He doesn't pass through a curtain into a room that represents God's presence. He sits at the right hand of the actual Presence. If you've ever felt like the religious structures in your life — the rituals, the habits, the forms — have become empty, it might be because you've been serving the shadow without connecting to the substance. The forms aren't meaningless. But they're only meaningful insofar as they point you to the reality: Christ, in heaven, mediating for you right now.
