What Does Hosea 10:6 Mean?

"It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel." The golden calf of Samaria (verse 5) will be CARRIED to Assyria as a trophy — a 'present' (tribute gift) to the Assyrian king. The god Israel worshiped becomes the gift Israel sends to its conqueror. The idol that was supposed to SAVE Israel is now GIVEN AWAY to the enemy. And Israel receives SHAME — and is ashamed of its OWN counsel, its own strategic decisions, its own self-determined path.

The phrase "carried unto Assyria for a present" (gam oto le'Ashshur yuval minhah — also it itself to Assyria is carried as a gift/tribute) means Israel's idol becomes TRIBUTE: the object of worship becomes the object of payment. The golden calf that Ephraim bowed to is now shipped to the Assyrian king as a diplomatic gift. The 'god' is repurposed as a bribe. The deity becomes currency.

The "ashamed of his own counsel" (yevosh Yisra'el me'atzato — Israel will be ashamed from its own counsel/plan) means the shame is SELF-GENERATED: Israel isn't ashamed of what someone else did. Israel is ashamed of ITS OWN plan. The strategy that seemed wise — the counsel that was followed — produced the shame. The shame comes from the self-generated failure. You advised yourself into this.

The golden calf — the god Israel worshiped — gets SHIPPED to Assyria as a gift. The deity becomes a bribe. The object of worship becomes tribute to the conqueror. And Israel? Ashamed. Ashamed of its OWN counsel. The plan that seemed smart produced the shame that now defines them.

The 'carried unto Assyria for a present' is the idol's final indignity: the calf that Israel made, that Israel worshiped, that Israel trusted — is packed up and sent to the Assyrian king as a GIFT. A tribute. A diplomatic present. The 'god' that was supposed to protect Israel is now the price of Israel's submission. The protector becomes the payment. The deity becomes the bribe.

The 'Ephraim shall receive shame' is the only thing the covenant-breaking produces: not the security Ephraim sought. Not the peace Ephraim wanted. Not the prosperity Ephraim chased. SHAME. That's what the whole strategy delivers. The alliances, the idol-making, the political maneuvering — all of it produces one thing: shame. The receipt says 'shame received.' The currency of the transaction is humiliation.

The 'ashamed of his own counsel' is the shame that can't be externalized: Israel can't blame Assyria. Israel can't blame God. Israel is ashamed of ITS OWN plan — the strategy Israel designed, the counsel Israel followed, the decisions Israel made independently. The shame is self-generated because the counsel was self-generated. You followed YOUR OWN advice. And YOUR advice produced THIS.
