What Does Hosea 7:5 Mean?
Hosea describes the corruption of Israel's leadership class: "In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine." The royal celebration has become the royal debasement: the princes (sarim — officials, nobles, the governing class) deliberately intoxicate the king. The sickness isn't accidental. The wine is supplied by the people who should be advising sobriety.
The phrase "day of our king" (yom malkenu — the king's day, his birthday or coronation anniversary) means the degradation happens on a festive occasion: the day that should honor the monarchy is the day that degrades the monarch. The celebration becomes the corruption. The feast becomes the tool of undermining.
The princes "made him sick" (hechelu — caused illness, produced the sickness deliberately) means the intoxication is strategic: the officials who surround the king are intentionally reducing his capacity. A drunk king can't govern. A sick king can't decide. The deliberate intoxication (hechelu — caused to be sick, produced the illness intentionally) means the princes aren't passively watching the king drink too much. They're engineering the intoxication. The wine isn't accidentally excessive. It's strategically supplied. The king who can't function serves the interests of the officials who want to function in his place.
The 'day of our king' (his birthday or coronation day) makes the corruption ceremonial: the day designated for royal honor becomes the occasion for royal degradation. The celebration that should produce loyalty produces incapacitation.
