“And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.”
My Notes
What Does James 2:23 Mean?
James quotes Genesis 15:6 — one of the most important verses in the entire Old Testament — and then adds something remarkable that isn't found anywhere else in Scripture: Abraham "was called the Friend of God." This title appears in Isaiah 41:8 and 2 Chronicles 20:7, but James is the one who connects it directly to Abraham's faith being "imputed unto him for righteousness."
The word "fulfilled" is doing heavy lifting here. James isn't saying Genesis 15:6 was merely quoted or referenced — he's saying it was brought to completion. Abraham believed God decades before he offered Isaac on the altar, but that initial belief reached its full expression in action. Faith that was credited as righteousness eventually became faith that could be seen.
This is James' answer to the faith-versus-works debate: they're not competing categories. Abraham's belief in Genesis 15 and his obedience in Genesis 22 are the same faith at different stages of maturity. The seed and the fruit are both the tree.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean to you that God offers friendship, not just a master-servant relationship?
- 2.How do you reconcile Abraham's significant failures with his title as 'Friend of God'?
- 3.James says Abraham's faith was 'fulfilled' through action — where has your own faith matured from belief into visible obedience?
- 4.Do you tend to see faith and works as competing or as two expressions of the same thing?
Devotional
"The Friend of God." Let that title sink in. Not the servant of God, not the worshiper of God, not even the follower of God — the Friend. Friendship implies mutuality, trust, honest conversation, shared history. It's the most intimate relational word James could have chosen.
And how did Abraham earn this title? Not through flawless performance. This is the man who lied about his wife — twice — out of fear. Who tried to shortcut God's promise through Hagar. Who laughed when God said Sarah would conceive. Abraham's résumé is full of failures.
But he believed God. Imperfectly, sometimes belatedly, occasionally while arguing — but he kept coming back to belief. And that persistent, stumbling faith was counted as righteousness. Not because it was impressive, but because it was real.
If Abraham can be called the Friend of God with his track record, then your failures don't disqualify you from intimacy with God. What matters isn't a perfect record — it's a persistent faith that keeps showing up, keeps believing, and eventually bears fruit in how you live.
